I gave up reading Fairy Tail so early...

I don't like it when the villain was almost not damaged even a bit, but then the dying hero kills him or so. Though this happened kinda a lot in Gintama, somehow I still like it, lmao.

what i dislike about a lot of shounen like naruto and one piece is page upon page of boring fighting scenes... how about some more STORY?

But talk to another person and they would say that manga has too much story and not enough fighting. It's funny how the same people who read something like Naruto will say "All they did was talk the entire chapter. Worst chapter ever." then next week it's "Why was the whole chapter one big fight? What happened to XYZ. Waste of a chapter." :sigh

Cliche is that the enemy will monologue or flashback for one or two chapters/episodes instead of just finishing the hero off. It happens in all forms of media, but it's especially bad in manga/anime. If you're going to do something, then just do it - the hero is going to destroy you anyway.

My least favourite trope is definitely gratuitous power ups. Not that characters can't train and learn techniques but I really prefer stories where a character has a limited skillset that they have to use creatively. Last minute secret techniques pulled out too often kind of takes the tension out of fights.

I also really hate when female characters are used badly and never given strong character arcs (or they're just dropped randomly, like Orihine's). It's not their fault that they're basically baggage, they're just written by a crappy writer.

Stupid, stubborn male leads. If the character's one or the either, it's fine, but the combination of BOTH is so irritating. Worse, they never develop mentally, so they stay dumb and headstrong the entire series.

^ This is the reason I dropped Kingdom & many new mangas. Protagonist shpuld have at least basic common sense.

Brawn almost no brain. I actually like genius over muscle mains. Having both at once is a treat though.

I actually like overpowered villains, the more invincible they seem the more suspense.

Superflat ridiculous villains though, no thanks.

I find shounen to be much less clichéd than shoujo, but that may be because I've read a ton of shoujo and not as much shounen. Here's some stuff I dislike in shounen though:

#1 - Situations in which the hero is depicted as the ONLY PERSON IN EXISTENCE able to defeat some enemy or another, even though this is clearly untrue.

#2 - Harems in which the guy is an uncool, unattractive loser yet somehow has a dozen gorgeous women flocking about him.

#3 - Too much ecchi stuff. I'm okay with it if it's well-integrated into the plot (like how in Eden no Ori, the girls happen to always be bathing while having important discussions...) but it annoys me when the guy's face is constantly getting shoved into disproportionately large breasts for no particular reason. As a girl, I'm not the target audience for this type of fan service.

I can't remember if I've commented on this topic before (probably not but still), but this comment is so great that I have to second it.

So, yeah, definitely this.

Most other cliches/tropes I can deal with if the mangaka writes it nicely, but I really can't stand female characters being there for the sole sake of fanservice (and for the male lead to show how amazing he is by rescuing her all the time).

I'm not a fan of overpowered protagonists who brute force through every battle either. Although, as a really common shounen trope, regardless of whether the guy was always strong or grew strong, I don't mind overlooking it as long as the rest of the series is good. I always prefer strategy, though, and weak protagonists that know their strengths and use their intelligence to win.

Oh, now that I think about it, Tatsuya from Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei probably encompasses everything I could ever possibly hate about a male lead. He has basically every single shounen trope I detest, especially because the entire series seems to be written just to praise him instead of with any real plot in mind.

Completely agree with the girl being accessories part. It's even part of mangas that I like, like Haikyuu!. Karasuno's manager only quality is literally how pretty she is, and how other teams envy them because they have such a beauty helping them. It's pretty popular but everyone seems to overlook how useless she is. I'd personally rather not have females at all, if the alternative is to solely help the MCs.

Another thing I hate is the most wimpiest, or very ordinary guy gets a bunch of girls. In other words, a majority of all harems. Maybe if he grows into a person who is reliable with redeemable qualities, or if he has some other character trait that's attractive, then I might like the manga. Otherwise, there is literally no reason for girls to be falling head over heels for someone that has zero sx appeal. Like, why would a bunch of gorgeous girls just happen to fall in love with this one guy who has no attractive points at all?
I understand that it's telling guys that "EVEN YOU, COMPLETELY ORDINARY GUY, CAN GET A HOT GIRL", but it's unrealistic and can lead to Nice Guys who wholeheartedly believe in the Friendzone.

That's because you're reading shounen lol. Seinen is apparently what you're looking for. I wouldn't call the lack of content a cliche, but more of a difference in genre. The fighting scenes in both genres basically have no big differences, except perhaps the amount of talking they do during a fight (which could be a cliche in itself). Back to my point, if you want less action and more dialogue, then look into seinen. For the most part, kids (the demographic for shounen) don't care about a gripping story as much as action or comedy.

Anyways, my least favorite shounen cliche ATM would be the dumb protagonist who doesn't realize the flock of girls that are all in love with him. That, or he can't choose one girl so he let's them carry on wasting their time being rivals. Because girls don't love anything better than a guy who can't make up his mind. "Oh, you can't make a simple decision? Well, I'll just share you with an assortment of other pre-labeled girls vying for your dim-witted, normal ass because I have no self-esteem!" That encapsulates just about every shounen "romance," as their has to be a rival.

There are just so many cheesy cliches. It's like mangakas will put 100 different cliches in a bag, grab out 10-15 and make a story about it.
Example: Normal guy bumps into school idol, gains the magical power of instantly becoming attractive, childhood friend shyly/openly competes with her, beach episode showing off a 14 year old's oddly adult-like body with outrageous measurements (like over-sized tits for even a porn star), both love interests settle with sharing protagonist, the end. Basically, girls are empty shells with no real character besides the generic "type" they're labeled with. A girl is labeled tsundere and that's the extent of her personality.

I agree 100% with your post, we will never enjoy shonen if we use our tiny brain to deduce shonen logic.

I hate it when they have that bland and obvious love interest!
