Welcome! I hope more yaoi fan will come too!

Recently I read this book called "Slayer's Apprentice" by Zathyn Priest. It's a cute novel with no sex at all and it's very sweet, romantic, angsty, suspenceful, and gripping with a surprising twist.

It's a romance about a 29 year old gay cop and an 18 year old waitress living alone with his little brother. But the 18 year old is a bit strange, he sleep walks, compulsively cleans the bathroom, screams in his nightmare every night and has psychopathic characteristics. The big question is, how is he connected to the serial killer who murdered 20 people? Is he the serial killer?

I read all of his books and short novels. I like Slayer's apprentice the best but I think he just moved up to me top 10 gay writer of all 2000- 2011 era. His book are well written and I'm impressed with the amount of analysis he went through with each character and their motive. I wasn't expecting a goth boy to be so deeply analytic in human.

I am reading his other book called The Curtis Reincarnation, let's say the bottom is a goth boy who never done it before, not even self love. It's a rare one in gay novel people. lol XD

and no, I can't provide a link, cause the author actually had a youtube video talking about people who posted his ebook online. I feel slightly guilty if I did post it online.

But i seen people have torrent on bitsnoop website named under zathyn priest. Shame on these people! wink eek

One of my faves (for being utterly adorable yet having some really heart tugging moments) is Totally Joe. I read this years ago and Joe is still in my head for his utter woobie cuteness. So the plot is straightforward-the 12 year old lead is assigned to write an alphabet themed autobiography that the book uses as it's structure, and the narrative has bullying, intolerance, crushes and first love- but the thing that really sets this book apart was that it was funny and sweet, yet still read very true to the character's ages.

War Boy was another of those interesting for stylistic choices as much as anything else books. It's mostly written in netspeak, but the writing changes as the main character, an abused deaf skateboarder, interacts with more people and grows. The book also has a colorful array of supporting characters (including an eco-terrorist, and two meth-heads who make a strangely sweet pair of surrogate parents) and does a good job of really throwing the reader into its west-coast underground scene. It's also interesting for mostly having characters who happen to be gay rather than them being gay being the focus.

hehe, I heard of both novels before. I never read them because i thought for Totally Joe, since he was only 12 in the summary, he can't be very interesting. But I'll try them as soon as I have time seeing it might be more than it seems.

I'll post my reference list too. While trying to track down the books I mentioned, I ran into great books for gay teens, which had a ton of titles that ranged from meh to really cool, plus a lot of the classics.

Well I'm a fan of just about everything Francesca Lia Block writes 'cause she's brilliant at the messed-up pretty people genre. She does very lyrical prose, so just about all her books have a very ethereal quality, and she makes some interesting characterization choices that do wonders. Plus, the Weetzie Bat books are some of her best, so I'd definitely rec Baby Be-Bop.

Another one that I think needs to be mentioned but isn't on that list ('cause it's not geared for teens/homosexuality doesn't become a major theme 'til late in the game) is The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. The novel is all about exploring identity through a filter of comic book and folk tale mythos (superman and the golem take centerstage) and homosexuality in the 30s and 40s is given a realistic treatment. As much as it breaks my heart, I do like that
Spoiler (highlight to view)
love doesn't beat all in this one, even though Clay does land in a mostly happy relationship for a bit of time, because of homophobia and societal expectations and the like

interesting....coming out stories ehh? the last one I read was Geography Club and it was kind of weird....Though I confess I never knew anyone in high school who was gay...

anyhow I found two very interesting list:
best gay cinderfellas

lol, cinderfellas? that's kind of clever...

Best Gay Ghosts

Now we're getting kinky! laugh

I am recently reading Bloodraven by P. L. Nunn

Let me warn all of you before you read any P. L. Nunn works....it's explicitly gory and bloody. Don't read it if you faint on blood because the main character will go through rape torture that kills him at the beginning pages. It's pretty intense.....
Bloodraven is about an elf boy and this half human half ogre guy. Obviously the elf gets captured by the ogres and becomes a sex slave, and so on. It's a pretty good fantasy book, even though P. L. Nunn isn't exactly too famous yet.

Ann Somervile's I Was An Alien Cat Toy is the sweetest novel I ever read. It's about giant lion/cat creatures on an alien planet and a human man in futuristic times trapped on this planet because his space ship was rigged. So he was captured by the lion cat people and they made him into a household pet, mistaken him for the native alien monkey creatures. But he met his savior, another giant cat/lion named Gredar who treated him like he was a baby. There on, develops friendship and love between human and giant furry lion humanoid. The sex is pretty hot and kinky, though limited. It's mostly story driven. The plot is pretty deep, explores meaning of human and pet. Highly recommended, very cute and powerful novel. click here

*update *

I read a really good suspense supernatural mystery gay romance by Kiernan Kelly called Seti's Heart

~200 pages

It is about a Egyptian king from 5000 years ago who offended an Egyptian God was cursed by live as a mummy for 5000 years. He was then freed of his curse and rejuvenated by a young man who is probably the reincarnation of his past lover. Thus begin their adventure of trying to escape enemies unseen.

Pretty good I say 4.8 star out of 5.0. Also if you go to kickasstorrent, and search "GLBT Books". You'll get a large collection of gay novels, this novel is one of them.

P.s. I know I said not erotic novel but it seems a lot of gay romance novel includes erotic scenes....I guess what I mean is it shouldn't all be sex.....I mean a novel full of sex 90 out of 100 pages is just plain porn and that's not allowed on MU decreed by our Lord Lambchop who has plenty of experience on this side. laugh

Hey, Recently I began reading gay themed books. Not yaoi or bl manga or graphic novel. Actual novel. And not erotic literature, ok? lol keep your mind out of the gutter.

So one book I read was Dream Boy by Jim Grimsley.

As you can see a 4.5 out of 5 stars from 171 reviews mean it's a pretty damn good book. I read most of it, and I have to say it is. There's also a movie based on it, which is fairly accurate but short.

So, I was in need of a good book (and not manga, lol), and of course being the person that I am, I wanted to get a gay-themed book. I saw this thread around when you first created it while browsing on my phone, I didn't read your summary or spoilers, I just went on a whim and got it. I read it in a span of three days in between school and working on art. hehe.

tl;dr: I absolutely loved it and I'm glad you suggested it.Thank you.

You are welcome SailorPokemon, I am glad you enjoyed the book. It's one of the few gay literature that have almost no dialogue whatsoever, but relies on body language instead of convey the character's feeling.

This is like, the exact opposite of A better place where the two main character just goes back and forth with mostly inner dialogue...

Nah, it's really neither of those three. Rainbow Boys is a trilogy of books following three gay teenagers trying to, uh, find their place in the world (that's the best I can describe it). Two of them are dating and the thrid is looking for someone. So, while they all know each other, there's no threesome or love triangle. It's not the most well written trilogy (Alex Sanchez is no J.K. Rowling) but I would suggest at least checking them out as they are the most well known gay YA novels.

Speaking of gay YA novels! I recently read the first YA novel to have an openly gay main character (that actually gets into a sort've-kind've relationship): I'll Get There, It Better be Worth the Trip. I had no idea when I read the book so I first thought 'wow, this isn't that great of a book' but it's really mindblowing when you realize that is was produced in the late 1960s. It was literally revolutionary. So, while the writing style isn't the most fantastic I would suggest checking it out if you're a fan of gay teen books.

To put that in perspective, I read my first adult gay novel in some time entitled Maurice. The book was written in a year, from 1913-1914, but was published after the author's death in 1970. It's hard not to see why the book was delayed for so long: while it isn't explicit it is very open about describing the gay relationship between the main character, Maurice, and his lover, Clyde. If you don't mind slightly downer endings (why must all gay books have sad endings?) I would suggest checking it out.

Last on the last of recently acquired books (I checked out a ton but these are really the only titles worth mentioning) was the YA novel In Mike We Trust. Written by an author who wrote another favorite title of mine, Saints of Augustine, he creates another fairly entertaining and cute book. And it didn't have a depressing ending (it's not that I hate them but I have noticed a trend and I'm fairly sick of it). It's a fun book and P.E. Ryan has a simple and charming writing style so I would suggest anyone interested in gay teen novels to check it out.

(Know why I don't include summaries of the books I read? Because I ruin them with my blathering. I don't want someone to not read a good book because my summary makes it sound bad).

Now, I'm one the hunt for more gay YA novels but I think I might've run my resources dry. Besides the goodreads list, which I've checked out but seems to have a lot of repeat titles, does anyone have any suggestions for gay teen novels that do not include a killer that kills gay kids? I've been conned many a times by library search engines because they register that books that have killers that kill homosexuals as 'gay YA fiction'.
