wow you've missed the most obvious one dragonball and im pretty sure right now in total money made it beats both naruto and bleach.

Oh I didn't explain very well.

I thought that it was too obvious; I was trying to fill the gap between Dragonball and the 3. After Dragonball, Jump lost a lot of sales but with the 3 they've gone up again.

What was the major driving force for sales between Dragonball and the 3?

Thats absolutely right eyes
And just let me add that Dragonball even let to such works as One Piece (as stated by the authors themselves...)

In same categorie as those three, surely was the recently finsihed Eyeshield 21 or also Hikaru no Go (at leats for me they were even better).

Also one forgotten gem may be Hunter X Hunter (again on hiatus, but it will come back eventually). Btw again inspired by Akira Toriyama's masterpiece wink

robit:uhm i was actually answering hubris' question in my previous post

but i really do believe that one of the successors will be about space travel.

but i think negima and psyren also have a good chance.

Psyren got really good cards, though I'm afraid it might end soon... (it will maybe crack the 100 mark, but thats it then...)

If HxH could maintain a weekly pace, it could become the winner (also I should note that it's for me at the same level with Naruto or One Piece...)

whoa rock i think 100s way to short if anything the author would try to end it around the date on which the rise rose to power. but i think psyren will hit at least 250 before its over.

I am using http://comipress.com/article/2008/12/31/3733 as a source and what I remember from a bunch of miscellaneous Wikipedia and other internet articles (very unreliable, my memory, that is wink)

1. About big 3 successor:
-I think Hayate the Combat Butler sells better than Fairy Tail and Negima in Japan (HnG(sales) are a little greater than FT(sales) which are a little greater than MSN(sales)), though I don't think its popularity will rival the big 3 unless it lasts for a long time. But as said in
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Bakuman
, once an anime starts (in this case for Fairy Tail), its popularity might become greater. D. Gray Man might be a successor to the big 3 if Bleach ends soon and it gets an anime that is very popular.

2. About former big 3:
-from the early 90's, the big 3 were Dragonball (started '84), Slam Dunk, and YuYu Hakusho (yes, it ended rather quickly, but it sold more than 2 million per volume)
-One Piece showed up only about two years after Dragonball ended, so I think it's possible that it can be considered a direct successor. Naruto (1999) and Bleach (2001) might also be considered direct successors to the big three of the early '90's, but because of the time lag

---- my speculation on possible other successors before the current big 3

-I guess a possible interim successor (before Bleach/Naruto?) might be considered Rurouni Kenshin
-HxH is a also a possible interim successor (before Bleach) until it started going on Hiatus so much (without the Hiatus, it'd probably have taken the place of Bleach in the big 3, or maybe they'd be known as the big 4 -- see the sales chart in the link above)

3. About Kishimoto:
-I hope he gets to follow with his plans for a manga with likely a very different feel from Naruto
Spoiler (highlight to view)
a mafia manga, Mario
-- I remember reading about it when I first saw the Naruto manga ~ 3 years ago.

Naruto=DBZ Bleach=YYH One Piece don't got one for that well it was heavily influenced by DBZ anything that takes over these top three will need a funny but strong main character shit load of characters well anything that resembles these 3 like fairy tail and beelzebub etc... people just like the out of the ordinary stories Bleach Supernatural, Naruto Ninja's and OP pirates

Silly Velt...
Here is the definition of "Successor"- "one who takes the place which another has left".
Simple english, people! laugh
Dragonball is already out of the question as it's time has passed (not counting remakes etc.).
Sure it may have the highest gross, but it can't "take over" something that came after it @_@

it would be definitely nostalgic to live without NaruBleaPiece chapters every week... Naruto and Bleach are not so good any more, but seeing chapters coming out for few years already it's like a sign that there's at least something unchangeable in this world.

but personally I don't think there will be some successor to those triad, cause time has already changed. maybe some manga will be pretty popular, but I doubt that someone will be able to surpass enormous world popularity of Naruto. as for Japan, there probably will be some titles as popular as One Piece, cause their taste is different to ours, you can check their TV animation rankings and there are those Sanae-san and other strange stuff.

even if there would be any successor, it definitely won't rise from some titles currently publishing. some of them are quite popular, but we shouldn't neglect the upcoming series' potential. I think editors are already looking for some mangakas or plots as substitute to those three giants.

and the day the final chapter of One Piece releases will be a black day for Shounen Jump. they may produce numerous reprints, but magazine's selling will drop drastically.

it may take some time, but their will come something with popularity equal to or greater than the triad! it just might take 5-15 years.
