Oooh hard choice but I'm going to have to say Lelouch. Though L could win too.... They both would give each other a run for there money for sure. But Lelouch knows more about chess so I'm voting for him.

"Pawns are the soul of chess." - Philidor
On a realistic level, Lelouch, because he's the only one with any experience playing Chess in the first place (Shikamaru technically plays Shogi, so I guess that would transition to some extent).
On a metaphorical level, still Lelouch. He's the only one to consider the King as a useless piece, and knows that the pawn is the entire foundation of the game, and victory.
L would fail miserably. He'd sacrifice pieces on a whim to get minor leg-ups, and find himself backed into a corner by the "lesser" pieces he disregarded.
Conan and Shikamaru are both extreme analysts who would view the game purely on a statistical and pragmatic point of view. I imagine they would play like machines.
Ishida...no idea why he's even on the poll. He's book smart only, has no strategic brilliance, and definitely has no ability to conceptualize the game several moves in advance.

Definitely Light. all he has to do is write the name of his opponent in a notebook...

Quote from Monstar Maalik
Toa from One Outs beats them all
Seconded! " Nobody wins but I"
Though I might as well add Akiyama from Liar Game and Near, he is even sharper than L after all.

Never watched Code Geass. I wonder why. Maybe I will now. Why is Ishida on there... and I'm not a L fanboy, no thank you.
So I would say Tomu Shirasagi from Gamble Fish. You can already tell from the title of the manga he's in that he will win.

Anyone who has watched Code Geass should be aware that Lelouch would definitely come last in any real chess tournament. He demonstrated on several occasions that he did not know the basic rules of the game.

Edit: Apparently I posted the same message twice. You'll probably want to delete this one.

Since chess is a game, the king of games should win. I vote for the guy from Yu-Gi-Oh!.

I couldn't vote.... conan would be owned in a little most likely but L, shikamaru, and Lelouch are both known to possess intellects that could predict the actions of real people even in an unstable environment... planning ahead in a set rules match it would most likely be a stalemate every time. So I vote for mao.... which is correctly not on the list cuz he is a huuuuugge cheater.... but cheaters always win kiddies xp
(Not so confident ishida could hold up well either... he seems to be a near future planner if anything but not rly a pushover)
So of the options id say L, shikamaru, and lelouch in constant ties, but shika would give up and Lelouch would probably bribe L with pastries or geass him so... ALL HAIL LELOUCH.... but the biggest questing here is how in the $%=& was kurama(yuyu hakusho) not included T-T.
Also just noticed giinkos post.... if you notice the actual plot of deathnote L was FAR superior to near.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
near started with tons of clues to pinpoint light as the target, and would have lost if not for outside intervention even though he held more advantages than L did at the end. Also consider that light was completely unable to corner L in actual strategy and was forced to use his ace in the hole which was the shinigami.... he had in fact lost but due to misa being in love with light he was able to circumvent his capture in a way no earthly being could resist... basically if not for lights get out of jail free card ren, l would have won when starting from scratch. Meanwhile near effectively lost to light but mello sacrificed himself to shift the odds, in the same way Light lost to L but ren sacrificed hims...hers...... itself. So based on that near>Light>L>ryuk.... cuz ryuk rules... actually Light started with a total advantage which had almost no chance of backfiring if used correctly, and he f'ed it up by reacting due to pride instead of strategy... so ill be fair and sayy near is probably above him... cuz he is a fricken moron
so ya..... imo near was crap. L FTWLast edited by SAimNE at 10:17 pm, Dec 22 2011

Quote from Myuym
The dude from 3-gatsu no Lion
I'm not familiar with/wasn't really impressed by any of the characters in the poll, so I'm agreeing with Myuym. That guy would destroy these guys, if he could transfer his shogi skills to chess.
But, as someone has said before I'm sure, it's really a matter of how familiar they are with the game. Chess isn't about being a natural genius, it's about knowing the right strategies. The concept of someone being a master chess player without any studying is a fun one, but rather unrealistic.
