Creepiness knows no bounds.

Meitantei Holmes - An adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes mystery series, worked on by Miyazaki, that uses anthropomorphic dogs for the characters.
Uchu Densetsu Ulysses 31 - a sci-fi adaptation of The Odyssey.

@akari_mizunashi, you continue to keep this thread alive with awesome recs... Thank youuuu! <3

But lol, no, I didn't create the based-on-a-classic category - someone else must have seen this thread and done it... I wish they would come forward so I can thank them for making my life so much easier! eyes

@Highway-STAR... Yes, I'm female. biggrin Others probably know about it because occasionally I talk about my personal history on forums like Chatter Box, and I have revealed my gender there.

@Divina, thank you so much for finding stuff that isn't even on BU yet... Hopefully those titles will be added soon!

I skimmed through and i'm shocked, no one mentioned Houshin Engi?

Awesome stuff there (very) loosely adapted by a Chinese (some claim Japanese) classic. Character and plot driven, it's a old series that has interesting art (it gets better, really) and characters that most people would like.

Hellsing is the follow up of Bram Stroker's Dracula if it helps.

Peony Pavilion derives inspiration from traditional Chinese poems like Wandering in the Garden, Waking from a Dream/遊園驚夢 (Ming Dynasty), Phoenix Seeks A Mate/凤求凰 (Western Han Dynasty) and Reeds /蒹葭 (Qin Dynasty).

Dare mo Shiranai recounts tales from Zi Bu Yu, the Qing Dynasty fiction collection.

Glass Mask has been mentioned, but I'll expand on it a bit.

The protagonist is an actor, so there are plays like "Little Women" and "The Miracle Worker" in there. Other famous plays in the series:

Spoiler (highlight to view)
"The Prince and the Pauper," "La traviata," "Snow White," "Wuthering Heights," "Carmilla," "King Lear," "Juliet," "My Darling Olampia, Product No. 707," "The First Love of Frankenstein's Monster," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and "Anna Karenina."

Mary Godwin - Rather loosely based on Mary Shelley and her conception of the novel Frankenstein.
