I briefly experimented with being on a vegetarian diet before and was kinda into animal rights for a while. The vegetarian diet did okay in controlling my weight but I was extremely depressed all the time. However! I gave up on all that for a few reasons:
1) I'm now on some meds that make me hungry all the time. Sure, I eat mountains of fruits + veggies every day but I've been warned to maintain a proper diet or my meds won't work as well. Well, since my medical situation is somewhat serious sooo... any thoughts of going back onto that diet just flew out of the window. I was told to avoid anything that makes me extremely depressed.
2) Well, after some time, I decided that according animals rights, tends to elevate a certain animal group to a status higher than the rest of the groups. That kinda like defeats the purpose of maintaining ecology and can result in a very skewed population growth that threatens the balance of the food chain. Furthermore, I'm strongly against drawing attention to an animal species just 'cos it's cute. Then if it isn't charming, cute, or whatever, does that mean it's something that should be abandoned? And humans come first: it's 'cos governments often waste too much money on useless budgets or schemes or indulge in corruption, that's why in quite a few countries, you find people resorting to illegal logging, overfishing, etc. in order to earn an income.
I'm not against treating animals kindly though but sometimes, I think humans need to really think twice before say, trying to "pamper" a species by isolating them away from their own habitats and depriving them from learning how to hunt or defend themselves. Of course, I acknowledge that human pollution(land, water, air, and even the freaking space), refusal to use birth control, overfishing by large fisheries, deforestation, dumping of unwanted drugs into the rivers/seas/oceans/ etc. have largely turned this planet to crap. The tendency to think that the government knows best, that humans know everything, etc. have only made things even worse: Fukushima incident(setting up a nuclear plant in an earthquake/tsunami-prone country) among the long string of ecological disasters.
And no, even though I read guro, I will never indulge in cannibalism. That's just plain gross.
