Quote from bzzzay
The only manga I've ever bought is Berserk...and I'm slowly accumulating a collection of it, just so that I have it. Each volume is like 14$ at borders, for 30 volumes, THAT ADDS UP

That's one of my issues too. The cost of an individual volume's not so bad, but I like the long series, so I'd hit a $1000 just picking up five that I like, though one of these days I'll go to a con or hit up a second hand shop*-I'm in New York, so I know if I look hard enough it'll be pretty easy to find it cheap. At least it's cheaper than comics-yes full color glossies with fabulous quality, but $15-$20 dollars for books that tend to be shorter than mangas is kind of a jip.

*though that sort of defeats the purpose if the goal is to support the mangaka.

I'd consider a subscription to shoujo beat or shonen jump, but the American ones are a year or two behind the Japanese ones, I only like one or two series in each, and it's $30 for 12 issues (I think shoujo beats a bit more) -cheapish, but kind of not worth it.

(Am I really the only one who doesn't buy manga more for the space considerations? My mom already yells 'cause my textbooks take over my floor, she'd kill me if manga started piling up.)

I can't imagine those people addicted to inuyasha

I adore "Oh My Goddess"-I don't even want to think about the cost of buying the whole set, plus DarkHorse tends to be on the expensive side, and the whole series would fill a crate.

manga/musicCDs/DVD's/etc tend to be way overpriced for two major reasons, demand and profit. there are lesser reasons, i'm too lazy to name them.

i'm not sure if prices are rising because of piracy, someone can clarify on that.

as for the OP picture, people just like BS-ing some products. it's like gambling, or hunting Moby Dick =P

I live in holland and i don't really think it's that expensive...
I get most stuff from archonia (online shop belgium 1)
Prices are:

viz manga is 6 to 7 euro's
del rey manga 7 to 8 euro's
tokyo pop manga 7 to 8 euro's
darkhorse depends but mostly between 9 -12 euro's (only akira and blade of the immortal tend to be more expensive)

I myself own like ehmm 700+ english manga so that alot of euro's but i've been collecting for quite a while bigrazz

Aye, all of us who read manga online are pretty much destroying our favorite series :] When a series doesnt sell well, dont they get cut?

Americans hardly buy manga anymore, upset for noobs who watch dubs on adult swim. japanese folks, you lucky dogs, getting everything first.=.=

What about the European people then? T.T They always get the stuff after North America, who get their stuff after Japan. At least with games, that's the case.

I don't think manga is really that expensive.
You guys need to understand people need to earn money for a living.
In Japan there is the artist, company, and the people who do all the book binding ect. Thats why its half of the books sold everywhere else.

And because its in another language for ex. in U.S. its around $8-10, because they have to translate the manga (even if its not as good as scanlators/japan), edit the manga and have tons of people proofread it. There also are a bunch more jobs that have to be done to the manga that has not been done to the japanese version. Due to that fact. Those extra people have to be paid also. So each book each person who worked on that book might only get 10 cent or w/e less amount per book. Since you can't forget the company, printwork shop , mangaka ect. also gets paid. That is why people who work on mangas are not rich at all. Even some of the workers admit it (both in TP & Viz).

So you have to take in consideration for the people who do the work for us to enjoy readin the manga.
Plus don't always believe that people online translated the manga perfect either. I was once in a manga scanlation group and one translator didn't really translate good. She evens admit once that she was still taking japanese class in her school. So there could be more.

If you look at a single volume it might be an appropriate price considering the effort to draw and publish it.
However, if you are a big manga fan this will definitely add up to a ridiculous point.

I'm currently reading 150 titles, have finished 40, and plus some unfinished ones, i've gone through more than 200 titles.
If I were to buy all that... dead
Something like 10000$?

I don't mind shelling out for a manga if it's nicely published and designed. I mean, Akira is well worth the 40 euro each for the quality of them. And I always love a good hardcover or dust jacket. But those normal tankobons ain't worth jack.
