I actually interested in seeing Zac as Light, just because I think it would be hilarious. I've only seen him in 17 again, and that wasn't bad(I was surprised there was no singing... there was lots of basketball though). There was a lot of posing in that movie though and cheesy speeches, so as long as he can do fanatical, it should be fine. It would be a great laugh. I mean.. who else can do this role and still bring in the box office? I feel Light's role isn't all that hard compared to L, so I am more worried about L (although I thought the Light casting was okay at first, then the make-up came in, and Light was worse than L in all aspects, including acting) Not that.. I saw the Japanese version either. It's kind of funny because there was an advertisement for the Japanese version right before the 17 again movie started.

Whoa, wait. WHAT are you people talking about? Why is Efron even mentioned as a possible candidate to play Light?
Fact: Zac Efron is a joke of an actor who lives on his looks. He could NEVER pull that role off.
Fact: No director with any self-respect would cast him in a lead role in this kind of dark movie.

What. If a movie has a good script and the actors are capable, the movie will make the actors famous. It doesn't have to be the other way around. Also, there are many famous young male actors in Hollywood. D:

Wtf, seriously are they even considering Efron? If your gonna do that, you might as well ask the Jonas Brothers to make a freaking theme song for the movie.

I'm just disappointed. I mean, there are so many good and better actors than Zac w/e-his-last-name-is, so why choose him for the role of Kira? D=
I might watch it, but I know for sure that I'll end up vomiting blood and my organs... Well, what else can I say but say that I'm disappointed that they're putting a preppy-looking actor for a role that doesn't exactly his image? =___=;;
I guess I wish that the film and scrip for every cast and the director was destroyed before it got out to the public, and leaving just the original Japanese version of Death Note. D=

@Hermit-chan: He can NOT, I mean as NOOOOOT play as Sasuke, the least he deserves to play is as Shinji, but then again Shinji is too good for him. D=

I don't know about Efron's skill at all, but I think alot of people are going with him solely because he looks like Light. I think thats a horrible approach to take.

You need a solid actor. Death Note is a movie where the main guy is like evil. After Heath Ledger, alot of actors are talking about how they want to play a dark role. Light could totally be that role. It's not often that the main character in a movie is the bad guy. Bad guy's are usually the coolest, but it's very rare to see a film told from their perspective.

I agree that this could really be a break out role for any young actor who takes it and does it right.

The first one? Yeah, it was pretty boring.
But the second one is MUCH better.

I doubt that it would be any good if made by an American ... I mean look at dragon ball the live action movie. It speaks for itself
If they were to do the same thing to death note then it would make everyone basically think its crap

I feel like comparing Dragon Ball to Death Note is a horrible thing to do. Both films will be low budget, but Dragon Ball requires a certain amount of money to even start to be done effectively. All of the cool stuff would be CGI heavy fights with tons of stuff exploding all over the place. You'd probably need like a $70M effects budget alone to even hope for it to turn out decent.

Death Note is way less technical than that. The cool stuff is basically a kid writing in a notebook while walking down a street, riding a bus and riding a train. You don't need a massive budget to do that well, and i'm 100% sure this film will get a pretty mediocre to low budget behind it.

Not to mention the content. Dragon Ball isn't really good to begin with. The source material itself is kinda silly and stupid and the movie comes of just as silly and stupid. Death Note has a pretty serious tone to it. I like to think that Death Note could end up more like how the Ring ended up than how some low budget version of a SFX heavy action film like Dragon Ball.

I suppose you are right, death note with a low budget would still be cool death note but still Americans have a way to ruin a story...
Spoiler (highlight to view)

If the movie can portray the dark atmosphere of the manga, then I'm all for it. They should end the movie after the first half though, rather than continuing into the chibi-L saga.

The movie has a -lot- of potential for an American conversion, more so than most manga. In reality though, they'd need a director who could handle it. And hell, for extra sell-ability, cast Johnny Depp as L. There's no way any current actors that look 17ish could pull off Death Note. Efron? -Please-. No one on Disney currently can act. The best Disney actors are likely the kids that play Zack and Cody, and their blonde little friend. What ever happened to shows like... Boy Meets World?

Honestly, I'd rather see the Superbad duo as Light and L before seeing someone like Efron. At least then the movie would likely be funny.

This is soooo typical america. Why do they have to imitate sooo many other moviesconfused
...this "remake" might become good, no doubt Hollywood will try their best, but I'm really afraid they will use their Hollywood-magic and destroy the story and just make this yet another Action movie... dead

But we'll see...

And having Zac Efron as L....NO! eek he does not have THAT good acting skills. It's NOT all about LOOKS.
I would much rather see someone new and unknown to act as L... shy

100% agree. Even a canadian actor could put on a better show than Efron by FAR. I don't care if the actor is a 30 year old posing as a high school/college student. Just not Zac Efron, PLEASE! They would totally ruin Death Note....
