I don't especially enjoy bear porn, so I don't like bara.

Bara isn't all bears, it's basically men without alot of muscle (sometimes chubby), hairy or not.

That's actually not true. Bara does have muscular guys.
Bara is gay porn for gay men, and it's either muscle men, or chubby or hairy or whatever suits the taste...

Hide and Seek is a good example for a muscular bara.

Either flabby and hairy, or muscular, they're equally unattractive.

Its really just hard for me not to laugh at the bara covers I've seen.

XD Bara...

I read one once, and I was totally not interested. lol. It's freaky to look at. But then again, my natural taste in men doesn't run to body builders.

The closest I've come to enjoying bara is Whip On! by Chouno Shibuki and Hide and Seek by Ike Reibun. But really, these aren't true bara. They're really just a women's version of bara. Basically yaoi with overly muscular men. lol.

Sometimes, I read it for the lulz. Sometimes, it's really not so bad though. There's some that's not excessively hideous, in terms of flabby, hairy or overly muscular.

I've always been curious about bara, but as I'm a straight woman and not a gay man it probably won't do anything for me. BL is nothing but pure fantasy without any resemblance to actual gay relationships; straight guys bonking for the ladies, basically. And I'm okay with that fantasy. But hey, lets hear three cheers anyway for gay men writing manga for other gay men! cool

Well, I don't like bara plots. It's even harder finding good plot bara manga than on general BL, since most of them are all around sex. Also, I dislike pairings with two overboyish guys or two overgirlish guys. A baraesque manga I found very fun was Whip On!, on its first chapters, as the semes were bara-like guys and the ukes were the BL traditional bishi. However, the plot development is very weak, and a lot sex-centered dead

I personally like bara, although admittedly it's more b/c I'm curious than b/c I find it titillating. Not much of it is scanned tho, huh?

Hmmm... you could try Sanzen Sekai no Karasu wo Koroshi. I wouldn't say it's bara though. At least the characters don't look like bears. dead Not sure whether the author is male or female.

Oh, stars, bara. >< I can't hear that word. It conjours up more horrible images than "goatse".

There's a website that has a lot of scanlated series... I went on it because I heard that bara was just like yaoi just without the uke/seme dynamic (which annoys me sometimes). The giant muscles put me off for a bit, but I kept reading anyway. Then... It was... it was... aughhhhh... ><

I've realized that I can really like any kind of porn written by women but I can't like any kind written by men. When it comes to sexuality, we're really wired so differently.

Here's the website, if you're interested: http://baralover.110mb.com/main.htm

I personally don't agree. There are hentai/doujinshi I like that are written by men and those crappy yaoi ones drawn by women that I find bad/boring. Maybe it's just me. If you can't stand hentai at all, it won't make any difference. roll eyes

The case of bara is that they have their conventions because the audience likes them.

Actually, I've just learned that not all bara is written by men and most of it is actually written for women. What the American fandom calls bara is really mostly "muscle-man BL", or "gacha muchi." Gay porn written by men, for men is referred to as "gei-comi" and sometimes bara. Not all of it has muscle men.

Also, the "I only like porn written by women" thing is a big generalization, naturally, but in my experience it's for the most part true. Most of the erotica written by women I've come across focuses a lot on the emotions and avoids to some extent the actual physical properties of the sex and genitalia (it is kind of gross and not at all flowery, after all), which I prefer. Most of the erotica written by men focuses more on the body parts. Gei-comi is no exception. There are plenty of exceptions, of course; the work of the female KONJOH Natsumi puts a lot of importance on the body parts of the women involved.

Anyway, most hentai is written by men, and I have to admit I don't like it. I like yaoi and some josei smut, the majority of which is written by women.

The problem is the style. Focusing on body parts is what hentai tends to be. It doesn't matter whether it's drawn by women or men. I don't have a problem with that at all but if you do, you should avoid hentai. And I personally wouldn't suggest someone under 18 to read hentai at all. roll eyes

Josei smut is not porn (actually most are too far away from being porn). It should have an interesting story or comedy, and good art style, otherwise I won't read it. Most of them just don't have stories that interest me and/or art styles I can accept. That's why I find them boring. But that's just my personal taste. The same standards apply to yaoi/yuri.

Bara isn't too bad, the sex scenes are usually "dirtier" than yaoi, which I like depending on the mood. A yaoi/bara fusion would probably be dreamy for me heh; gay relationships aren't always how it's played out in either cliché they tend to fall into, but a gay relationship yaoi/manga aint so easy to come by.

Since I don't really dig guys with long hair; I usually end up having to skip copious amounts of yaoi, quite a pain really. Bara itself can be annoying when parts of the body (usually facial and regular hair) are drawn in a rather sharp/jagged way.
