Ah, but they're part of the same series of OVAs, no? Well I meant them as a whole, and they're great. Though I have to admit that Kenshin's background story is superb! Tomoe~ ;__;

No they're not. Trust and Betrayal is material from the manga about Kenshin's past as Battousai with Tomoe. Reflection is an anime original of the casts' future.

But Reflection is a continuation of Trust and Betrayal! They're both made by Studio DEEN. OVA series 1 and OVA series 2 belong to the same OVA compilation. There. embarrassed

I watched them in one go, anyways. And I didn't see no gap between them. They intertwined perfectly.

A pear is a pear and an apple is an apple, but in the end they're both fruits, capiche. Well, that's my interpretation. bigrazz

The OVA's are like this:

Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen (Trust&Betrayel), 4 eps 1999
-> Prequel of Kenshin's past with Tomoe
This one is an animation of the huge flashback shown in the manga and therefor technically set before the manga story starts.

Rurouni Kenshin: Seisōhen (Reflections), 2 eps 2001
-> Sequel and final end of Kenshin and Kaoru
This OVA is not taken from the manga plot anymore. It's set several years after the manga and very controversial discussed regarding it's ending.

I don't know what you guys were smoking, but the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs were brilliant.

Same here. I love both OVA's including the non-manga related ending. Especially loved how the scar fades away by the end <333

It was a really nice solution for me and more satisfying than the last manga chapter. I love seeing the characters to the very end.

Atleast this thread provides two different views on the ending of the OVA. cool

again, I just dont see it as part of the canon. Apart from the fact that it follows the manga arcs, it's never been intended to be a canon anyways.

Kenshin doesnt even say "Oro" in the Betrayal and reflection.
I liked Betrayal more but I prefer reading the flashbacks from vol.19,20,21 since it has more humor and it's kicka**!!

some people are confusing it. Its not that he died but the way he died.

he barely got to see his wife, his son disliked him, and yeah, he was pretty ill.

He didn't die of old age, heck that would have been awesome and nice. he was probably in his mid to late 30s when he died. Though I don't think the ovas were bad, especially the early one.

anyway it was a pretty sad ending, the whole ova was sad. It didn't look like a celebration of a great life or anything.

There's still some good in it. He did good without fighting, and he had the spirit to continue upto to the point he got back home

Seconded.
The OVA was a masterpiece.
The ending is depressing, but it's not a "bad" ending.
IMO it is saying that scars made with strong emotions will last a lifetime, thus, it only totally faded when he was dead.
Also, it was his way of atoning for all the deaths he's caused in the past to go around the world and help people (in the anime) - meaning he wasn't going to come home until he was incapable of doing more anyways.
Rurouni Kenshin is a romance story, and IMHO, the Anime/OVA ending was much more romantic than that of the manga.

Even so, I still cried buckets. TT_TT

I haven't watched the Reflection ovas in years so I don't remember many of the details but I do remember very clearly how terrible I thought they were. I've thought about watching it again to see if 5 years would change my opinon but to be perfectly honestly remembering how terrible it was the first time around I don't feel it deserves a second chance.

After the joke that was the 3rd season of the anime the fans wanted to see the Jinchuu arc animated and aside from the Trust/Betrayel ovas which are brilliant all we got was a few minutes of Enishi and the rest of the garbage about Kenshin going all emo and leaving his family.

I never watched the ova's because of the fact that kenshin dies at the end of it. But I seriously like the manga ending. He was redeemed, and it does show that he marries kaoru and has a son with her(big plus for me, I am a sucker for these types of ending), forgot his name though, think it was kenji or something.

i dont know if you guys know about it but,...
the ova reflection was not written by the original author
here's a quote from wikipedia....

"Although Samurai X: Reflection was not written by Watsuki, Watsuki said that he "checked in on the script."[1] Watsuki, unhappy with the result, said that "Kenshin went through so much crap and deserved a happy ending."[1]

so i think for me the ending was like a fanfiction (even though it's not)
cause it was not based from the real personality of kenshin.. it's true it was based from kenshin's life and stuff but the author of the ova didnt see through to it how Kenshin should be...

if i were to be asked... i'd like watsuki-sensei to remake the ova based from his real story smile

I wonder how they can adapt something without the mangaka's approval.

It would be cool if there were a sequel starring his son, though (with the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu, of course). biggrin

Also, Kenshin was obviously not in his 30's when he died, considering his son's age, & AIDS? wtf?

I thought Seisouhen was an absolute train-wreck of an OVA. It seems like what they tried to do was recapture the awesomeness of Tsuiokuhen while at the same time fusing it with the art style of the anime. The result is you get the depressive, tragic feeling of the Bakumatsu set in the idyllic Meiji world and the two just collide.

Kaoru isn't Kaoru. She's a clone of Tomoe. Kenshin isn't our beloved Rurouni, he's Hitokiri Battousai wielding the Sakabatou. About the only ones they got right were Megumi and Yahiko, who seem to keep their personalities from the manga and anime.

Where's our loveable, swirly-eyed rurouni who says "oro" all the time and learns throughout the Kyoto and Jinchuu Arcs to value his own life and to accept help from others? Where's the fiery-tempered shihondai who would brain Kenshin with her bokken if he spoke of departure again after everything they went through together?

The worst of it is, in the OVA, they consent to live like this and then bring a child into it, never thinking of how Kenshin's frequent forays into the wider world will affect that child, who has no say in how his parents live their lives. I don't blame Kenji for his anger toward his parents at all in the OVA.

In short, it seems like this OVA wants to continue the anime/manga story, while preserving the darkness of Tsuiokuhen. It tries to be both and fails completely.
