Since adding all sorts of new genres to the current list seems to be troublesome and unpractical, why not adding tags?
Things like "vampire" "yakuza" "cooking" "rape" "yonkoma" "family life" etc' etc'.

Any thoughts?

So I just joined as you can see and first off I'd like to say it is very cool site and I see it and me become very good friends biggrin

As for things that could help, the brief time I've been searching I haven’t really found anything that I could tell was using it so I will throw it out there. If you were to add a way to search keywords attached to the manga the same way as you have the genres connected to the manga. This way if some one comes on to look for manga about rock stars. They type it in and they have a relevant search.

This may already be in place and I just can't tell but I think it would help out with people looking for a certain topic that might span over multiple genres but not necessarily interact with those genres.

Again awesome site!

I don't know if Manick plans on adding a "tagging" system which would have keyword descriptions. I talked with him in PM and he said that he has a program that has 50 keywords that would describe every movie (I sort of wonder myself if all movies' plots could be 'described' in 50 different words) and work how IMDB describes movies. Here's the example of Walk the Line's one. Since I picked a biopic, there aren't any real "spoilers", I guess.I wouldn't have considered the main couple "Star Crossed Lovers" but that thing seems to cover even "broken glass". I don't even remember where that was a part of the movie, but I guess this shows if a person wants to look for some really obscure scene where a glass gets dropped (actually, that doesn't seem unmemorable), that might be 1 second of the film, it's included. wink

Here "no" usually means no. laugh

Well, there was a suggestion to add key words to manga. That could allow you find/filter out incest. Well, this suggestion was ignored laugh and I don't see any more ways to do what you're asking for.

I agree completely to Indreju. Filtering keywords (like the reverse of searching for them) would be a brilliant idea! biggrin and if it's minor it could be said in the synopsis "warning: some incest". So the genre wouldn't be altered or over-loaded and people will be able to avoid it eyes

Same here, especially after totally ignored key words idea laugh

Let me emphasize this suggestion by quoting it. (>.<)/

I do like the keywords idea. And maybe for avoiding too much keywords put a limit of 5 or something? The keywords won't be a 100% accurate, but at least there'll be some indication towards which series suits your tastes the best.

P.S.: Credit to Ind for the keywords idea. ;P

and what does kids refer to?

Like Doraemon. Manga for kids.

And 4 komas are usually short chapters, and has a slice-of-life feel to them. They have a comic strip format, and exist out of four panels. Incidentally, 4 komas mainly consist out of gag comedies.

I think that these words suit better as keywords, if that system ever gets implemented.

It all goes in a totally wrong direction...

You're all thinking of defining manga genres as the way to make the search results more accurate.
Adding more and more genres is not a solution, like some ppl have already noticed.

There is another way to deal with it, but I think it may be too late to add it.

Key words.

Theoretically, adding 4-5 key words to each series could make the search a lot easier, whatever your search may be ( 'fashion', 'love triangle', 'medicine', 'writers', 'yakuza', etc. ) without adding new genres and messing with the current system.

As for now, the search engine allows you to find a title with a certain key word only, if the word is present in the manga's title or summary ( it's easy to check, type for example 'glasses' in the series search and then check manga that doesn't have 'glasses' in it's title ).

The problem is...what to do with all the series in the database? I'd say, let ppl ( or at least some ppl ) add the key words for as much manga as they can ( I could do that for about 600 titles myself )and even if not all titles have their key words added, in the end there's still gonna be some positive change.

If this idea was discussed before, don't bite my head off, please. It's the middle of the night here where I live, I don't feel like going trough all the threads in this section...again... dead

As you can see it has been mentioned a lot. laugh It's just something hard to implement, I guess.
