I bought a cheap Xbone on Ebay and now have all 5 current consoles. Yay? The Kinect is creepy and sucks so i sold it and the technological sides of the hardware as the install times are frankly inacceptable. The controller is better than the 360´s but no DS4 and the free Project Spark and Killer Instinct are fine offerings. The console is good but clearly in the creative 3rd place this gen.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon I don´t get how this archaic genre is still alive (only in Japan i guess) but i like Atlus and the source series. These factors couldn´t convince me though to go on even it´s the best such game i gave a chance to. Skip.

Guilty Gear Xrd got cheap enough to import (Europe didn´t get a boxed release) and i am only a casual GG player. The graphics are well done despite the PS3 roots and the score rocks but i was left a bit disappointed as this first entry is clearly feature incomplete and slower than before. The series should be fused with the slightly better Blaz Blue and be freed of the nonsensical narrative for me to come back as i gave Arc System enough money for borderline patches. B-

Mad Max got a mixed reception and i am on than side as it is clear that the developers only put the B team on it so Just Cause 3 better be good! The lame story represent the franchise in name only and the game was ultimately too boring to finish. Skip.

The Witcher 3 The books are nonsense and this one ties in the hardest but the continued characters and stories are once again pretty different so that ended up being a non-issue. Ciri still sucks though. The sex-subplots were better in the 2nd game and are way too juvenile but i am not opposed to their justified existence and my biggest problem is that the women kind of leave the story after your “conquest”. Most characters actually just walk of stage into side quests and that is fine as i finished every quest over my 80 hours journey but the main narrative suffers due to the high amount of optional payoff. The choices are mostly decisions if you want to do the quest or a follow up too which is weird as the prequels had really consequences but the writing is sharp. Even the titular Wild Hunt ended up being over hyped in the last act yet i once again joined the ending and got the “bad” one. Aka. the best one. The difficulty curve is a bit broken as the very challenging game (i played on the 2nd highest difficulty) turned into a walk in the park halfway through and only main mission give you proper XP. Weird but most of my criticism is only skin deep and the game is a technical marvel. The weather effects especially need to be copied into every open world game and the high amount of variety surprised even me. The combat is the best in the series and Gwent + some of the free DLC are a cherry on top.
I like DA Inquisition more due to the superior writing but this is clearly the standard for current gen RPGs. Grade A- and i will return for the add-ons.

Transformers: Devastation The don´t mind the franchise and i like most of Platinum’s offerings. This "budget" game though is a Platinum-light as a short playtime, reused assets, simple mechanics (the shooting is crap) and an average yet well done presentation are the name of the game. I still had fun and i would like a real sequel or a 3rd Cybertron shooter. I can recommend a rental if you like DmC clones. C+

Until Dawn is the missing link between S.H. Shattered Memories and Obscure and a new age adventure game with no real gameplay. I like it more than every David Cage game besides Fahrenheit and the biggest problem are the jarring genre shift in the last act and the nonsensical psychiatrist plot. The over reliance on fake outs is borderline comical and choices are a gimmick only. I still finished it 2,5 times due to the game flow and the surprisingly engaging characters. The good outweighs the bad and the presentation is shockingly good for a first time A level effort so i would buy a sequel. B-

Started playing a bit of Starbound. I didn't get too much into it since I've been busy, but so far it's kinda fun.

Currently playing Witcher 3 and Dying Light. Enjoying both.

Side note, I can't help but notice how the whole Witcher series is actually pretty similar to Claymore. Maybe not story-wise, but....idea wise.

Either way, I'm looking forward to a new RPG. Hopefully something similar to DA : Origins or Oblivion.

I have returned to Rivellon with Divinity - Original Sin Enhanced Edition. The new Tactical difficulty setting and the various tweaks to the skills abilities etc are just the thing I needed to keep the challenge up to match my power- and metagaming tendencies. Loving it.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is more Unity (Rouge was better) with a similar starring duo and barely a narrative present. I game flow is better and encountered more bugs than last year but i also played a slightly earlier version. I still don´t like the vapid leveling system and the tedious bounty hunter missions need to go. The protagonist switching mechanic feels like an afterthought too as Jacob is the clear lead and both play identically. The context sensitive soundtrack is lastly a neat addition. B

Dead Rising 3 Apocalypse Edition I never got why the franchise needed to be kept separate from RE and am even more surprised how much i again managed to enjoy the trashy B movie narrative. Never change Crapcom… (but do change). The on-screen zombie masses are highly impressive but the gameplay itself could have used more polish. The map is too stretched out, the score used to be more memorable and the DLC structure is a bit messy but I loved that it´s progress also counted towards the overall grind. The whole package is ultimately memorable and even somewhat unique in the survival horror genre. B

Game of Thrones The return to the 6 episode structure is a bit stretched out and the game may offer too many variables with how it ends for the follow-up to neatly continue. TT though nailed the Ice and Fire universe even if they skipped all the sexposition. I certainly had more fun with the game than with this year´s S05 as it (and S06) adapts the messy 4th and 5th books. Fans of GoF and nihilistic dark fantasy will have fun but don´t expect a complete narrative. B

Halo 5: Guardians Halo 4´s campaign was a masterpiece but the follow-up features the worst campaign in the series’ history. The flimsy narrative sucks, the continuity is a mess but the story still demands the audience to be well versed in the expended universe. John is barely in the game (3 mission!) and the new protagonist Lock is a worse replacement that Venom Snake. Bah. I just sprinted through the levels by the end and the squad AI is frankly a joke which is inexcusable as the game lacks co-op campaign matchmaking. The ending is lastly worse than Halo2... The multiplayer is well done and a back to the roots approach with Halo 4 advances mixed in so i can recommend that aspect but do not buy the game for the campaign. B-

Life Is Strange There were many discussions about diversity and the role of women in games recently but i was unhappy about that since the late 90s. I bring it up as that decade closed off with The Longest Journey (10/10) which is regarded as one of the best games of all time and Life Is Strange feels like a spiritual sequel that is better than its 2 sequels. The 5 episodes series started deliberately slow but improved and grabbed me over time while exceeding with topics as rape or homosexuality which tend to backfire spectacularly in this silly medium (hello MGS 2-5). The sci-fi story is more importantly well thought through and the world building is particularly strong. The writers further had the guts to stick to the gradual darkening tone in the last act so i am coming back for the developer’s next project. The gameplay is nothing special as this is a “playable movie” so i can´t recommend it to just anyone but fans of Steins Gate and adventures games need to give it a try. A-

Sunset Overdrive is Infamouse meets Ratchet & Clank with an obnoxious attitude (unskippable cutscenes are a sin). The gameplay is slightly undercooked as less than half of the guns are worth it and the combo system isn´t quite smooth. Fans of both will have fun anyway and i like the Tony Hawk-esque soundtrack. B

Tales from the Borderlands wasn´t a game i imagined to exist after the abysmally written Borderland 1. The episodes certainly took their time but the finished result is TT´s 3rd best game after the Wolf among Us and The Walking Dead. Critics even described it as Cowboy Bebop/Firefly - The Game and it certainly is! My only gripe is the way too happy final episode but that one got the best reception so what do i know? Knowledge of the franchise isn´t necessary but it will help. B+

The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes The developers and some publications stated that the game works as single player only which is a complete lie and the game even has a (much needed) level skip function. The targeted demographic are apparently puzzle crazy Japanese school boys with 2 friends on standby as a two player mode is missing too. Skip

Wasteland 2: Director's Cut I played Fallout before it went 3D (the first is still the best) and am a hardcore gamer of the old school but this one is just too much. I world is surprisingly generic, the menus are hell and the battle system is both tedious and unbalanced. I can live with the lack of presentation due to the humble budget but the game is way too ambitious and i would rather play Fallout 4 in the end. So i did just that. Skip
