So iv been reading Historie and Vinland Saga which are both great historical mangas. I was wondering just how relevant are they?
I know the characters (and their personalities) where adapted to better suit a manga but as a whole does the story follow the real thing? (ex: state of the world, the battle/war outcomes, the death of noteworthy ppl, ect...)

Well for Vinland Saga I really dont know much about the acctual history, was wondering if the whole king stuff was true and if the battles where won/lost as they where depicted in the manga.

For Historie I know the jist of it is true (His origins, name, position) but I dont know if it hapend the way it was described.

King of wolves is based on Genghis Khan and the mongols but the real historical facts are heavily distorted.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
They're japanese and Genghis Khan died early and was subsituted by a Japanese man from the future. lolz

EDIT:

This too, is HEAVILY distorted.

Erm, this isn't exactly a looking for recomendation threads Ô_Ö.

As for the historical relevance, as there isn't exactly detailed historical records, they are probably constructed around certain known facts. And yeah, mangakas do research on stuff they put in their works, not all of them though. laugh

I'm actually impressed by Vinland Saga.

Close-to-authentic medieval costume play is a hobby of mine and at the medieval events I attend, you come in contact with a lot vikings reenactment players as well. Being not a 'viking' myself but having a little insight in the research, I'd say that the mangaka has carefully researched on the clothes and environment, not at all comparable with the mainstream viking stuff you see everywhere else.

Surely not perfect but he already leaves out on the grave mistakes, e.g. horns at the helmets, and concentrates a lot on close-to-accurate clothes details.

Quote from Regnak

I'm reading Historie (I love this manga) and I'm studying ancient history at the university so I can tell something about that.
In short words, I can say that the state of the world, the battle/war outcomes, the deaths of noteworthy ppl, ect. are very much relevant. Everything "private" about the characters is pretty much fictional (anyway Eumenes' personality is mostly correct). For instance the mangaka is working on the fact that Eumenes has been very loyal to Perdicca and Alexander to make them friends from the very beginning, while diffident to some other characters and you'll find why later.

But this only for now, remember that for many ancient character you can tell just a little about his youth (especially if they are not nobles and Eumenes was from a very poor family in reality). Eumenes is mostly known for having been the secretary of Alexander during his Asian expedition and for having been very loyal to him and to his memory and we're so far from this in the manga. Probably later we can tell more about how much the mangaka followed the ancient sources about him.

I'll give you some example which I put on spoiler tag (they are not really spoilers if you are reading the manga, but read it only if you read it to the latest chapters):

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Eumenes is obviously a legitimate child, not a Scythian (but I think I can understand why the mangaka made him a Scythian, but I'm not gonna tell because it could be a big spoiler unless you really want to know :P). A Greek would never adopt a barbarian child, no matter how crazy he could have been. Also we know that his family was very poor, so that's clearly impossible. Hyeronimus wasn't his brother, we only know that they are both from Cardia (he's 8 years younger than Eumenes).
You probably don't run in Aristotle like in a random encounter from D&D if you are wasting time in Cappadocia. :D
If you survive a wreck (I strongly doubt it) and you happen to be found by barbarians, you are screwed.
Besides this many aspects of this manga are very good and relevant (for instance Philippe Arrideus was really a retard) and I can guarantee that the mangaka has a good knowledge of the greek world (I can at least tell that he read Plutarch and Diodorus). He's just purposely inventing semi-credible stuff to spice up the story.
