Hii,
I really like historical mangas with some action and romance.
I've read stuff like Red River(which I really liked), Rurouni Kenshin, and I'm currently reading From Far Away and can't say whether I like it or not because I'm only on the first chapter.
I heard that Basara is similar to Red River so I'll try it.

But I do not like mangas with weak, annoying female heroines who aren't capable of taking care of themselves and have to be rescued over and over again.

Here's a historical manga with a GUY as the main character....he's smart, I think he might be able to fight, who knows, but it's a great manga with action and he does uhh have some romance sorta kinda.

Although the historical part is fiction, I would suggest Basara and Anatolia Story.

Miriam. It's not the usual historic setting - it's old-fashioned cowboy Wild West, so there's no frilly gown-wearing or sword-brandishing. But it's a fun romance with an admirably capable heroine.

A Night of a Thousand Dreams -its labeled shounen- ai but the stories have romance in them...its also got some action and blood dripping...youll see what i mean if you try it..

Rose of Versailles is a really good manga. And it's a classic. Strong heroine who was raised as a man to be a palace guard, really good romance.

Manga I'm loving ATM: Heart no Kuni no Alice

What about Rurouni Kenshin ? It doesn't have one sole main character and Kaoru and Megumi and Misao all have romances.... Well love interests anyway

It's a good manga... I guess the romance isn't the main priority but it's there I promise! Even the mangaka called it a shoujo shounen :-S
