I suppose I have to be very careful with the way I word this request so here goes:

Is there a manga title out there where the hero chooses the female third wheel, the opposite of the main heroine? Or even an underdog?

For example: I can't remember what the name was, but there was this title about a hero and a heroine who loved him, and I thought they would end up together. But the third wheel was no joke; she was snobby and stuck-up, but she harbored such painful, unrequited feelings for the guy, which she kept a secret and was about to give up... until the guy went to her. That was a shocker, because she isn't a main character - but it's a pleasant one!

Basically:

- The hero doesn't go for the likeliest option (no main heroines).
- The third wheel must not be helpless and retarded. If you hate her guts because she's frail and spineless, then chances are, I would as well!
- This can be considered a "surprise outcome" request, with a few specifics, that's why I made a new thread for it.

To go even further, here are some made-up pairings from anime/manga that fit this request:

- Saku x Hime from Sora no Manimani anime : Hime's the third wheel who likes the main guy (but looks like he and heroine would end up together oh well.)

- Teppei x Sylvie from Princess Lover : She's his fiancee - that means she's the third wheel and looks like she's in danger of losing the main to the airhead main heroine!

- Oga x Kunieda Aoi from Beelzebub manga. Third wheel, likes the guy, didn't make much of an appearance, oh well. Looks like main will end up together with the heroine also.

- Hinagiku x Hayate from Hayate no Gotoku. She's not the main character, but it looks like she's developing well with main character. Actually has an equal chance with heroine (whose chances are going down even more!)

Unfortunately manga are not usually so unpredictable.

Because you pointed out Hayate, I'll point out what I think it could have a similar scenario: Mahou Sensei Negima!. It's just my impression, and it's probably wrong (I have it on hiatus, so the story could already have gone in another direction) but I had to say it.

If you are into anime too (but I'd say more unexpected pairs than third wheel): Kimi ga Nozumu Eien, Final Approach (not properly what you asked but I think you'll find it funny if you give it a chance) and Mugen no Ryvius.
