Not sure about female. But Yuki from Fruits Basket suffers from asthma attacks- not sure if he counts as a main character. As does one of the twins from Shinshi Doumei Cross, I think it's asthma...

The protagonist's younger brother suffers from asthma in the second story in Yûnagi no machi; Sakura no kuni. Not shoujo, but still a beautiful read. Even if the asthma bit is small. bigrazz

There's a short bit about one of the main characters having asthma when he was younger in Crimson Hero. I think you'll find that these plot lines are more common in shoujo, where the main character overcomes a health problem when they were younger.

Also not shoujo, but one of the main female characters in Umineko no Naku Koro ni suffers from asthma.

Shin Angyo Onshi

No one ever said it was asthma (since we are talking about a history with no real doctors), but is fairly close

I didn't read the whole manga, I kinda stopped a little bit of the way into it. However I got the feeling that it wasn't asthma. It seemed more like it was a curse, or something's side effects. I had asthma when I was a kid and without treatment it can be bad and hard to breath but it went away if you calmed down and suffered through it after a while. His condition seemed like no ammount of waiting through it would help.

It was a curse. It's explained in the manga later.

-_-

a curse?

the guy couldn't move around all that much, and lost his breath quite easily... not to mention his GF coughed blood quite a few times, so I always thought it was something like Lung cancer... but HEY the lead never got that far (cough blood) so in his case was probably reduced lung efficiency, IE something like asthma -_-

PS: In old ages, most diseases were curses... even the fucking flu, so don't bring that nonsense in here

Hmm lets see

A manga that deals with the history of a country (Korea), just with overly exaggerated stuff (go and read the author comments)

SO my point is very valid... just because the guys in the manga called it a curse doesn't mean it wasn't asthma -_-

Nana Osaki from "Nana" has asthma, but it happens late in the series.

You said the curse was nonsense and I proved you're wrong.
You can read here if you're still not convinced it was a curse:
The Curse- Having inherited Kye Wol Hyang's illness through Aji Tae's trickery, Munsu constantly suffers from severe pain and breathing difficulty on a daily-basis. As such, he must make frequent use of a breathing device he carries on his neck. This curse of his however is a double-edged sword against Aji Tae; it gives him complete immunity from all of his godlike powers and abilities
(http://jushin.wikia.com/wiki/Munsu)

Asthma is a predisposition to chronic inflammation of the lungs. A predisposition is something you have since birth, not something you get by a curse.

Re: Shin Angyo Onshi, I think that it was lung cancer or something else life-threatening. Munsu was originally extremely strong, so he could hang on for a while with symptoms that appeared mostly like asthma.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
I seem to remember that the woman Munsu loved was ill first, and then he agreed to suffer from her disease in her place in an effort to save her life.
But it was also a curse, since switching the person who had the illness was not natural -- there was some supernatural power involved.

There is a character with asthma in The Sickness in Youth, but warning, it is yaoi.
