Gundam is almost like the Star Trek of Anime except it was only Star Treck from 1979 - 1994.

All the series below are considered "UC" series. Universal Century. They all appear on the same time line and even though they are definitely watchable as stand alone series they all work in chronological order. They all are around 50 episodes.

Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980)
Mobile Suit Z Gundam (1985-1986)
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986-1987)
Mobile Suit V Gundam (1993-1994)

They also released OVA's and movies to go along with the UC series. They made stand alone movies as well as movies that are recaps of the two first series Mobile Suit Gundam and Z Gundam as well as 0083 and 08th ms team.

Movies:

Mobile Suit Gundam I (1981)
Mobile Suit Gundam II (1981)
Mobile Suit Gundam III (1982)
Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack (1988)
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1992)
Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team « Miller’s report » (1998)
Mobile Suit Z Gundam I «A New Translation -Heirs to the Stars-» (2005)
Mobile Suit Z Gundam II - Lovers - (2005)
Mobile Suit Z Gundam III - Love is the Pulse of the Stars - (2006)

OVA's:

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 « War in the pocket » (1989)
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 « Stardust Memory » (1990 à 1992)
Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team (1996 à 1999)

After all these all are tellings on the same time line sometimes characters from other series would appear in other series. But in the essence of simplicity this is basically all the UC time line series.

I Don't know the exact reason but i feel like they had ran out of ideas to do with this time line and wanted a new approach. In the mid 90's they decided to do something different. Instead of keeping the same rules and basic government structure that the other UC gundams had created they decided to retell the gundma series from grown one the main things that would be included were colonies and of course gundams. Everything else was turn down and the series to follow were:

Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994-1995)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (1995-1996)
After War Gundam X (1996)
Turn A Gundam (1999)
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (2002-2003)
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (2004-2005)
SD Gundam Force (2004)

The only two from the second gundam series that has anything to do with each other is Seed and Desitny, all the others are complete stand alone series they just came before and after. There were movies made for Turn A and Wing but they are just movies and i'm getting tired.

As to answer your other questions.

Doujinshi is basically a fan manga, some include innocent stories that fans make up others include more mature themes. A popular thing with gundam is yaoi though plenty of hentai doujinshi is made as well.

Side Story i believe is the same thing though maybe a little more offical. I know of a few manga that are separate tellings from another's point of few but i don't feel like any of the side stories really bring or take anything away from the gundam series.

Nonono, i know what they mean...
What i meant was, which of the gundam series is doujinshi/side story. I thought some of them were, but apparently not?

Anyway, thanks for your answers. You should go to the gundam series info page and update them with all the connections.

Too Gundamn many! bigrazz I wonder how many people have watched all of em. confused All I've seen is Seed and a bit of destiny. SD Force was the stupidest version EVER. Maybe its because I watched it on TV a.k.a english version, but urgh. Chibi gundam was one thing, the crappy voices pushed it to the limits and the main character was bleh.

No, a doujinshi is a self-published manga and is not fan made only. While this is often the case, it's not rare that a professional mangaka decides to make his own circle.

You should put more attention to what rypkord said. He specifically stated that all the series that he mentioned are animated. He can't update a info page because this site is MangaUpdates: It lists manga, not anime. Don't be confused, the fact that a series has a manga counterpart doesn't mean that it has the same contents (and therefore storyline).

Ok, but can someone update the info pages on the manga series then? As you so cleverly pointed out, this is a mangaupdate, so i'm obviously asking for the manga, not anime.
