Interesting thread. If anything, this thread just proves that most people don't actually know what an animated cartoon is.

The term cartoon has more to do with the length of an animated film than its style. It is a general term that is used to describe short animated films, as opposed to a feature length animated film. For example, a 30 minute episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Naruto is a cartoon, but you wouldn't call a film like Spirited Away or Bambi a cartoon. It's only appropriate to call a work of anime a "cartoon" if it's shorter then, say, 45 minutes in length.

As for whether or not it bothers me when people use the term cartoon to describe anime, it doesn't. Sometimes anime films are cartoons, and sometimes they aren't. If the person is using the term cartoon as a blanket label for all anime then I generally just assume the person is ignorant.

I'd rather that people call anime anime and cartoons cartoons, but I also know a lot of people don't really know the difference yet. I think more and more people are becoming aware of it, though.

And yeah, there's a big difference in even Saturday morning cartoons and the Saturday morning CLASSIC and GOOD cartoons of way-back-when and not-so-way-back-when.

not really....

i get more annoyed when you try and tell someone that knows nothing about it, and they act like "its all the same"

technically yes, but the way i see it is its a style of animation.

the same way one genre of music has different sub styles.

take for example hip-hop . its a term that encompasses several different styles like freestyle, gangsta rap, hell even christian hip hop as well as distinct regional sounds like east, west, dirty south and chicago styles. is christian hip hip... hip hop. yes. but christian hip hop =/= gansta rap just cause its all hip hop.

anime is a form of animation that has a distinct style, themes, and story flow. and since many are made for those over the age of 9 they can touch on more adult topics than say... your average saturday morning cartoon.

so saying its all the same is both wrong and right. it just depends on what "all the same" is referring to.

that was way more ranty than i meant it to be... confused

Bothers me quite a bit.

Apart from drawing styles, the way characters express themselves are quite different - especially in terms of comedy.
Though nowadays, we get a mix of both...
I suppose it's like the whole "manga" and "comic" thing and how they're called differently depending on where they're made/released. :\

It doesn't bother me at all, what bothers me is when people call certain western cartoons anime.

We use the world anime in english to refer to the origin. It's not the style or writing. The style, writing, character development, plot, blah blah blah have all changed as time has gone by. Just because now a particular way is popular, it doesn't mean those things define the word. Heck, even today there are anime series that do not fit into the mold that people try to describe as anime. It's still anime.

The only way anime should be used is as cartoons from japan, otherwise we'll have to remove anime series since they don't fit how you suddenly defined anime.

Same with western cartoons, the popular style and writing have changed. But old cartoons and new cartoons are still cartoons.

Finally, the guy who stated that he'd never seen Spongebob cut Patrick in half... Well I saw something like that on Metalocalypse, or half the other cartoons on adult swim. And I can turn that around too, I never saw Sarara slice Chiriri in half with a sword and cause blood to spray out in Bottle Fairy. Plus it's not story based. Is it suddenly not an anime?

It doesn't bother me but it does annoy me when they call anime manga or manga anime. If you're gonna use the correct words, instead of the American words "comics" or "cartoons", at least know which one you're talking about. roll eyes

Agh, I mean if you're going use any word as the english equivalent for anime, it's either going to be "animation" or "cartoon". although "animation" is a little more accurate, but most people are going to opt with cartoon.

it's like calling mochi, "rice cake". the term is generalized and not quite accurate but, really, it's the only english equivalent we've got, so who cares.
