A bit of a variant off the enemies-falling-in-love threads, but I have a lot of specifications.

1. Main protagonist the villain falls in love with must be female. Villain can be either male or female.

2. The villain must actually be, you know, a villain. I want there to be some conflict between the parties aside from personal dislike, something that truly sets them on opposite sides, so basic rivalry doesn't cut it. I find that this works the best if it's not a school life manga.

3. Protagonist must be likable, have goals for herself, and some basic strengths/skills. I hate reading about girls who just sit around and whine about their lives.

4. Villain should not do an immediate 180. I want them to fall in love and squirm at the unfamiliar uncomfortableness, not haven't them totally converted by the power of it.

5. Would prefer to have the villain be the one who falls in love first, but it's not required as long as he/she does it eventually. In fact, I don't even care if the protagonist loves them back. (Unrequited love for the heart-broken win.)

Manga/Anime I've Read that Fit the Description
Basara - the whole Shuri/Sasara thing, but also for the nearly non-existent one-sided Blue King/Sasara thing
Boku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte - a rare school setting that actually works
Code Geass - a little weird since Lelouch is the villainous protagonist, but I liked the Lelouch/Euphie relationship
Glass Mask - Maiya/Masumi. Period.
(Also, not Anime/Manga, but the 90's Cartoon Gargoyles] - okay, so Fox wasn't the protagonist, but if someone like Xanatos can fall in love so can any other villain of quality)

Manga I've Read that Didn't
Anything by Shinjo Mayu - her heroines are mentally deficient
In Which a High School Girl Meets a Guy She Hates But Then He Starts Coming Onto Her With Rape-Like Overtones and She is Confused But It Turns Out It's True Love So Everything's Okay - ...I really shouldn't have to explain this one
Legend of Nereid - started off promising, but it got a bit weird and eventually lost me
Masca - really like the relationship, but a bit too friendly for the kind of relationship I'm looking for right now
Superior - falls in love way too fast, also good guy is obviously male

Soooo... a long and detailed request, but does anyone have any recommendations?

First volume of Crying Freeman... the guy is more the protagonist, but the girl is a major character, especially in the first volume, and you see things from her perspective as well. The first volume is pretty much a self-contained story, so you don't have to worry about reading the rest, which moves on from their relationship (and eventually somewhat degenerates in quality besides).

Watashi no Ookami-san - hilarious parody/comedy about a hero (young girl) and the demon king who is crazy in love with her

Shurei/Sakujun from Saiunkoku Monogatari (anime season 1)
Yuri/Ramses from Red River

Vampire Game should fit, though he's not very evil. He is kinda bored from being evil so he just follows the heroine around and helps her out.

Ludwig Kakumei possibly... or maybe... not... @_@

What about School Days..?

Hanatsukihime maybe?

Here's the summary: When Lys was born, her heart did not beat at all. To save her, her mother made a contract with a devil: Lys can borrow his heart until the day she turns sixteen, but after that, he will eat her body. Together with her companion, Siva, someone whom she met by chance in the desert at night, she travels around as a dancer girl to find the devil who sealed her fate. One day, while they were traveling, they suddenly meet an egoistic prince and a ring spirit...

The main relationship in the manga is Lys x Siva. And Siva's true identity is... can you guess? Can you guess? (Well, it's not much of a spoiler since he reveals himself to the reader within the first few chapters--though Lys has no clue.)

This might fit what you're looking for since Siva is technically the villain (and is lying to Lys about his true identity), but then again, it might not since he starts off the manga already in love with her.

Tsuki no Shippo:

It's a shoujo about ninjas. The protagonist is pretty annoying, but she has skills in herbal medicine/poison-making. The villain character doesn't show up until a little more than half way through the manga, but the heroine-villain interactions are worth it. It's always tense because she always screws him over and you think oh this time he'll kill her for sure, yet he doesn't. Creepy as hale.

Not sure i follow your criteria entirely, but i'd put a recommendation for superior. Involves the "demon lord" falling in love with the hero and then wondering if she can do anything about it or if she'll have to kill him etc.

if it doesn't fit... read it anyway! it's good.

First of all, thanks for the replies!

@ jedinat - looked at Watashi no Ookami-san, a bit too friendly and non-serious for what I'm looking for at the moment; will check out Crying Freeman

@ Odette - I can't believe I forgot about Yuri/Ramses while making my list, but is a very good example of what I'm looking for; will check out Saiunkoku Monogatari (do you recommend the anime over the manga?)

@ nutrifa - reading Seimaden, it has good potential (although currently I'm wanting to stab Laures' wing ears)

@ drolemil - actually, Vampire Game is the second manga series I've ever read. xD Sort of the thing I'm looking for, but still a bit too friendly.

@ theRandomChocolate - Ludwig Kakumei is... odd. Is there even an overall villain in that one?

@ brid - I've been iffy on trying out Hanatsukihime because of the artwork. Might not be exactly what I'm looking for, but since you recommend it I'll check it out.

@ chaumein - oh I'm all for heroine-villain interactions. Will check out.

@ Ayato_Kamina - mentioned Superior in my post; the demon lady falls for the hero within like... two panels. Unless the relationship becomes more complicated it's rather in the middle of my current reading list

I subscribed to this topic ^_^

Hm....uh maybe
Spoiler (highlight to view)
UlquiorraxOrihime from Bleach? -shields off rocks- One may not like Orihime, but one can't deny the relationship after the hand reach >.>

Aside from that, I have a question about Basara. I started it, but it started out real slow and I dropped it. In your opinion, is the relationship worth 158 chapters of my time XD? There's a lot of mixed feelings :\

Yep! Lots of character development and all that good stuff. I KNOW you're picky about art, but it is adaptable. bigrazz Lots of loveable characters, too. I personally loved the Blue King.

I was so rooting for him and Sasara. Darn Red.. I need to stop siding with the underdogs.

I think the anime is much better, at least for Season 1. Maybe because the source material is a light novel, not a manga, there is nothing really special about the manga -- it just feels like a watered down, less thoughtful version of the anime.

Threads of Time- Sali Tali is in love with main girl in the story- he is so evil, this is the best villain falling in love story I've read - http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=3077

Princess- Tor falls in love with Lala, pretty tragic end to their relationship, he never says he is in love but you can just tell, also you have to read alot of the manga before you get to their story, its worth it though - http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=745

Jewels- Evil king falls in love with his enemy/ protagonist, this has a bit of shounen-ai b/c the protagonist actually can change from boy to girl (not completed) http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=934

- I really love this genre too, I hope others will find some more manga like this

My all-time favorite manga is Glass Mask!

Have you tried Hana Yori Dango? I know it's a school life manga, but it's pretty good....

I know you're looking for manga, but you should check out this book series; it seems to fit what you're looking for. It also happens to be my favorite book series: The Sundered by Michelle Sagara West
(the heroine and the villain/anti-hero fall in love in the midst of a war between the light and the darkness/ good and evil)

book 1: Into the Dark Lands
book 2: Children of the Blood
book 3: Lady of Mercy
book 4: Chains of Darkness, Chains of Light
