I understand what you are saying, but I disagree with the idea that stories need to be written a certain way to make main characters mirror the audience. If anything writers should be using the opportunity to show male characters that actually get their shit together and learn how to be proper men, not reinforce the idea that it's okay to be wishy-washy and mopey and weak.
That said, I believe GE's mangaka is actually pushing her lead towards being a more confident and decisive guy, as was shown with his recent interactions with his co-worker. Basically I think this story is what more shonen romance should be, an annoying wussy idiot character that makes me want to punch him for the first while, who eventually learns how to be a decent human being at some point in the story.
