I'd like to pose a question to you all: Who exactly is the "Vampire Knight" -- Kaname or Zero (or someone else). I think answering that question is the key to figuring out who the "winning" couple is. Remember, the Knight protects the lady, but they are not suppose to get romantically involved with the lady ;p. That is their duty.

I have my own opinion, but I'd like to see what other folks think first.

Well, I'd say both Kaname and Zero are in the same situation, they want her, but can't have her.

I honestly would say Zero is the knight, he knows full well he is gonna slip into madness someday and has tried to get away from her and tell her to leave him alone but she refuses. He likes her but is putting her first most of the time. Where as Kaname still has all his ambitions and plans and seems to intend to make Yuki into a vampire as well. But a twist to that, Yuki could very well be the Vampire Knight, seeing as it is a Shoujo. She has two guys and a school of Vampires that she constantly protects even at the risk of her own life. So in this case might not refer to the guys but to Yuki protecting them.

But she's always being saved and Zero protects the school more than she does, so I must say that I disagree with you ^_^;;

I'll say both Kaname and Zero are vampire knights because they are both vampires and wanted to maintain peace between humans and vampires. [even though Zero does it out of hatred and for Kaname for Yuki ] eyes

I would love for Yuki to be the Vampire Knight who protects both Kaname and Zero. But I think it's still up in the air who the Vampire Knight actually is.

So let's start with Zero. Ultimately this is the story of Yuki and Kaname so while important, I think Zero is a secondary character. I think the question, also, must be asked whether Zero is protecting Yuki by choice. In some aspects, yes, but when it came to Shizuka, he selfishly wanted death. The same could be asked of why he sucks Yuki's blood. I think the fact that he is no longer hesitant, too implies some selfishness and this is definitely not an act of defense for Yuki since it seems like Zero takes too much and without permission -- I hope you see the parallel to another another act perpetrated upon women without their permission. And so it seems indeed that Kaname has a hand in willing Zero to be Yuki's shield by not killing Zero under the condition that he protects Yuki. I think selflessness is part of knighthood, so that is why I eliminate Zero from the "Knight" designation at this point in the story.

On to Kaname. I think that Kaname would like to be Yuki's shield too, but there are other things he must take care of in the Vampire world to insure his safety and, most likely, Yuki's too. I think an important thing happens when Kaname offers Zero his neck and Zero bites into it. Yes, it's HOT (!!!), but Kaname is being very smart about this, as he is breaking a bond of dependence and intimacy between Zero and Yuki, thereby restoring Zero as a shield both physically and mentally and eliminating the need for Zero to bite Yuki (something Kaname longs to do himself). On to the question of the manner in which Kaname protects Yuki and why. Kaname's methods are of the relentless and manipulative kind. He does most things from behind the scenes and uses others to do most of the dirty work. I think it's important, though, that he delivers the killing blow to Shizuka, meaning that he too has no problem doing the dirty work, so long as there is little danger to him and he gains something extra to increase his ability to carry out his will. I also think that Kaname doesn't believe he has to die for Yuki, but rather he wants to live for Yuki. I know a lot of you think that dying for someone is sign of ultimate devotion, but I think the one-sided nature of this needs to be examined. I think many of you will understand this when you actually fall in love and it's for real. When you love someone you worry a lot about the health and safety of your partner. When you, yourself, get seriously ill, all you can think about is how hurt and lonely your partner will be if you die. I live for my husband and I would do anything to protect him, but I want to live to be with him, so I wouldn't throw my life away without a good fight. I would fight to be together. I think, in short, this is what Kaname is trying to do. He is trying to make some way for he and Yuki to be together. Think about what a tragedy it would be for Kaname to give Yuki eternal life and then for him to die, leaving her lonely forever. But are these the actions and motivations of a knight? I don't think so, so at this point in the story, I don't think Kaname is the knight either.

This brings us back around to Yuki, who is truly the selfless one in protecting both Zero and Kaname. She seems to be willing to recklessly throw her life away if it meant they could be saved. The problem is that she doesn't really think things through and doesn't realize in the end her sacrifice would be meaningless because the dangers so far to Zero and Kaname wouldn't have been eliminated by her death. In this sense, Yuki is currently closest to being a Knight, but her combat abilities are rather weak and her nievete makes her too trusting to think things through.

I guess, my stance currently is that we need to read more of the story smile. I imagine as the story progresses someone will emerge as the knight.
;)

The knight = the protector. And lol, you didn't have to be a lady to be protected. In Europe, a knight is someone who swore to protect for example some lord, and follows a certain codex.

The are few possibilities:

1. It's about the headmaster ( as he is clearly the only one really caring about the cohabit matter )

2. Zero - he has a "lady", he fights for her and school rules ( codex? )

3. It's Yuuki...she has put a lot of energy in the fight for a peacefull coexistence of vamps and humans in the school, so she's more of a knight that any of the guys.

4. Kaname? No. He's way to selfish.

Also, it might be simply a word game. Vampire knight - vampire (k)night.

i think the mangaka probably intended the name for the popularity cause only, not meaning there to be a vampire knight anywhere in the story XD

Since there have actually been references to chess, I'm guessing that the title was intentional, and that there probably really is a "knight" in the story. Too bad that the knight piece in chess is one of the ones with the most limited movement...

I'm actually thinking that it might be Zero. I don't have the manga on hand at the moment, but during the part with Shizuka, Yuuki, Zero and Kaname, Kaname had the chess board set up with only four pieces. When he bested Shizuka, he destroyed the white queen piece, which left the pawn, the king, and the white knight.

Here are my thoughts on who's who:

Kaname: King. The most important piece on a chess board. Without the king, there is no game.

Yuuki: The pawn. Pawns may seem useless, but they have the unique ability to turn into queens. In light of chapter 36, this makes a LOT of sense.

Zero: The only piece left. The knight. I don't think that the part in volume two with White Lily was just randomness on the author's part, since the piece on the chess board was a white knight.

Either way, these are only my thoughts. ^^ And since I don't have the manga with me, I can't be certain about everything, but...

^^ actually I do agree with u because personally I think that way too. A prince (Kaname) is like a king. A knight as always is somebody to protect a designated person and under usually the king (except maybe retaliation for his lady in hand ^^ )
