My Mother is a bit skeptical towards Anime and Manga, though she's known about it for quite some time. Her first impression (as well as mine) was left with older series such as Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Sailormoon, and whatever else was on Toonami way back when. Now she always sees me reading Manga or watching some Anime, and I don't think she really approves of it.

So, I was wondering if someone could propose a series that really anyone would enjoy reading. Though, I'd recommend you don't propose sappy romance ones because she's a single mother, after going through two marriages. She probably wants to believe in love, but I don't want her to get ideas and say to herself "I wish this happened to me" or something, as she was obsessed with the Twilight series, probably for this reason. (This may make me sound like a douche or a horrible person sad

So, any recommendations would be appreciated biggrin

Maybe My Girl (SAHARA Mizu). It's a little sad, but I'm suggesting it anyway.
I think she would genuinely enjoy it.

More information would be helpful, though.
But I guess that can't be helped.

Chocolat (KUBONOUCHI Eisaku) (haven't read most of it though)
Hotaru no Hikari
Ichigo Mashimaro (anime.)
Luck Stealer
Read or Die (anime.)
Samurai Champloo (anime.)
Full Metal Alchemist (anime.) It's sorta hard not to enjoy this, I think.

I have to suggest Yotsubato! (manga) because it's something just about anyone enjoys (unless they hate little kids).

She might like the anime Princess Tutu - it's not some cliche magical-girl story, though it may seem like it at first. (The manga *is* just another magical-girl story, as I understand it, and not a very good one either, so I wouldn't recommend the Princess Tutu manga.)

My mom's not much interested in manga/anime but she likes both of those.

Princess Tutu...Although I've only seen half of it, was depressing for me,
but it was very good and still a huge favorite. I need to get around to finishing it >.>
Depends on your mother's personality I guess ^^

Yeah, it is on the darker side, though I didn't find it depressing, exactly.

It really does depend on the mom's personality & preferences. Those are just the two I could think of that *my* mom enjoyed.

I second Yotsuba&!. It's impossible to dislike it. On a similar note, Chii's Sweet Home is also irresistible.

For something more mature/intellectual, you might get her to read All My Darling Daughters, Mushishi, or White Clouds.

And if she has a sense of humor, she might like Gokusen, but then again, I wouldn't show this to my own mother.

Pluto or any other Urasawa Naoki thriller might be a good suggestion just to show her that manga storytelling can be very sophisticated. The Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Junot Diaz likes Monster.

Bride of the Water God is fun and interesting. It has the romance and the fantasy.

Full House I haven't read the whole manga but my friend said her and her mom watched the Drama and her mom loved every moment. Ah, such a good drama.

Crazy Love Story Graphics a lot older but still a beautiful story.

Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan - a beautiful, bitter-sweet tragedy, I really think this one's enjoyable as a short, serious reading
ES is sci-fi/romance, but I think it's pretty intellectual and serious in its own way?
Emma is something that I haven't read myself but have heard quite good things about it. apparently it's not that generic in terms of romance and the whole story is quite good.
Vampire Girl is pretty good if you can stand the tragedy (I don't know how much your mom would like it, though, but hey, she's a fan of Twilight)

The Aria anime series is recommended if your mom finds slice of life stories interesting. The series doesn't really have an over-all plot, nor is it intense, but there's something very sweet and peaceful about the way it's presented.

someone already mention this: otoyomegatari
and i also suggest
Aa Megami-sama
aria not actually romance but still it's worthed
Ookami to Koushinryou
and this may sound weird (but then again i'm a weird person): gunslinger girl biggrin biggrin
and i guess something like sketchbook and Sentarou
that are all on the slice of life genre, which is great for any age i guess
PS: just wondering how old is your mom?

Hoshi no Koe - A bit depressing...
Double Arts - I haven't read it, but from the reviews, it looks very original
