Well people I had a question. I know how in japan atleast names are inverted compared to english so that a person's last name comes first. Does that hold true in any other asian countries?

I basically just found out about my new roommate for next year so I'm trying to figure out where he's from.... but yea help?

I believe it's also for Asian-type countries. I know China has the "family before self" mentality and it applies to their names too.

This search http://www.google.com/search?complete=1&hl=en&q =cultures+last+name+first&btnG=Google+Search
the first hit is Wikipedia and the quote is "In Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese cultures, the family name is placed before the given names. So the terms "first name" and "last name" are ..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_name

Yes, that's true for my family. We're Taiwanese/Chinese.

And when speaking English, always call a person by their first name first, no matter where he/she is from.

Make sure he knows that you are senior to him and he has to clean after you and cook for you and also do your laundry. This is an important custom in America that he shows respect to the seniors!

laugh Then see how long it lasts.

Same here like in most places, you can actually have the mothers name for the children or even for the father or even pick up a new name incase it does not exist yet.

In my family the names are decided from the year your born (Chinese zodiac) or some sort of self meaning.

Example
youngest siblings translates to "Heavenly mountain"

i dont think any of you get it. ill give an example. lets say thiers a guy named jack(firstname) daniel(lastname) if he were to marry a girl who's name is tracy halkins the girl's name would become tracy jack, and if they have children, the children would have jack as thier last name

Well, technically, in America, you can do anything, even make up a new last name for your children. Girls don't have to give up their last name when they get married now.
