Survival: How far would you go?

Poll
To survive you would...:
- Do whatever it takes (and I really mean it)
- Try my best (still wouldn't do something extreme)
- I'm not sure (extreme situations sometimes make you use extreme solutions)
- Nah, too lazy to survive (Ya, I can't help it)
- The "I don't agree with the poll choices so I will specify in the thread" option (well, I tried to make it sound better but that is all I could do, haha).

the will to survive is one of the strongest emotions we posses.

It's not an emotion, it's a critical instinct. If it wasn't there, Evolution would've died off way before us.

you're awesome
this is the point I was trying to make and obviously failed at,
i would try to make the best out of the situation regardless of how things turn out
i think i would try to have faith in people around me and try to trust
at times like this , to have someone who believes in you would be more than enough eyes

I do just about anything aside from eating animal or human waste. no I'm no Bear Grylls.
I wouldn't kill my family either. Everyone else is screwed. They'll be food. eyes
Since I don't own a gun, I'd have to trick one of my friends and probably kill him and take his supplies. I'd then go to an acquaintance's house who is a gun freak and kill him and take his guns and ammo. I'd figure something out from there. Maybe team up with one other person.
It all really depends on the type of disaster and circumstances. Just procure a gun quickly. Or set really good, impassable traps bigrazz

Agree. I'm not sure of what setting are you suggesting, different circumstances = different survival techniques. But ultimately, is there a reason for me to survive? If the world ends, and all of my family/friends are dead, I will just jump down from somewhere => wanna try to fly before i die. laugh
For revenge, hmm... I would go quite far if it worth it.

I don't mind killing people as a method of self-defense...
Pretty much my answer to this pole, except for the suicide part. I would probably not suicide out of hopelessness and try to make some meaning out of my final act. Maybe my opinions are a little different, because at work I'm in a situation where I'm held directly responsible for the survival of about three dozen people. (and I hope uall realize personal survival is usually tied and dependent to the survival of the people around you, especially in a crisis situation and my line of work) Personally, my own survival in itself is fairly insignificant in the face of a reason to live. Meaning I would rather die knowing that I kept the hope of civilization safe for children or a future generation than kill off all my enemies and hoard a big supply of end of the world rations laugh we'll all grow old and die eventually anyway! What meaning is a few more hours, months, or years of our own existence against hope for a better future? I'd prefer to not live propagating such selfish arrogance.

Boy, remind me never to be stuck with some of you guys in a survival situation. 0.o

agreed
im surprised to see the majority here would kill to survive
i would never do that...i think..
even under survival situations i would probably stay sane and keep my morals and pride heh bigrazz
i think i would try my best to survive without doing anything extreme,if im going to die then so be it ...

yeah i'm pretty disapointed so many people jump to killing and looting right away, we're not chimpanzees - we are humans, we change the environment to suit our needs, So long as we are alive have the potential to rebuild and progress civilization. Only dumb monkeys would digress in the other direction for any reason other than to protect our own kind and defense.

Are you talking about survival in the wilderness, during an accident or something else? To me, survival in different surroundings = different tactics required.

Well, I won't mind killing animals or eating wild plants for survival and that's only if they're safe to eat. I wouldn't eat another human though 'cos human meat carries a lot of diseases and bacteria. Plus, I'm totally NOT into cannibalism(except for its usage in stories, to scare or creep out people).

Also, I wouldn't drink my own urine unless I've got a water purification system(tablets, filters, etc.) that'll purify it and make it safe for consumption. In Singapore, some of our water is recycled from urine so it's not like it's a big deal. Besides, fresh water these days is heavily contaminated with all sorts of crap. To preserve water in my body, I'd probably try to avoid salt and too much heat and might even discard most of my clothes.

I'm not really into the act of killing others since I'm terrified of blood and gore(irl) and strongly abhor the act of taking someone's life. But if I have to, I'd first try to wound the person instead of trying to kill him. Plus, I've heard time and time again, that killing someone deadens a part of you and I'm not crazy enough to go that far, unless the person really intends to kill me.

I wouldn't help someone kidnap a person, hurt a person's family, etc. nor am I going to wound a child or use a child as a bombing target, just for the sake of luring an enemy out.
yeah harming children for personal reasons of any kind is a big no no

Exactly, even though there's this big craze with bottled water nowadays - purifying water to drink is not that difficult!, even from stagnant puddles -provided you have fire. (use to have much outdoorsy fun adventures back in school days) However, I would not recommend drinking unfiltered urine as some people mentioned, it contains poisonous ammonia and waste that your body discards for a reason... If there is life of any kind in an area (bugs, fauna, wildlife, etc) then you will probably able to obtain much needed protein from them (as humans we are gifted as being omnivorous).

as for cutting off own limbs... well i guess i'm at a cross between if i was in a situation like that guy at the end of Mad Max or that guy who hacked his arm off from being trapped under a boulder and cauterized his own wound knowing he would die slowly of exposure if he didn't do that

My thoughts exactly. Animals and plants die all the time, and we are no different. Eventually the world turns away from our lives and what follows can either be accepted and, what time is left, lived peacefully or struggle until the very end. I would rather accept the inevitable and give up my physical body to the Earth, afterall, it is only a vessel. It could be that what remains is an eternal soul or just energy or even nothing. But I believe a part of me would live on, in the rain, in the air, wherever. If I am ever stuck in a desert or an island or whatnot, maybe I would try to survive, but not at the expense of other people because I cannot change what I cannot lose: the impermanence of my own existence. I want my fleeting moments to be filled with peace.

Ah, I'm not a believer of an afterlife, so I guess the meaning was different than yours.

I don't exactly either. When I said a part of me would live on I literally meant all the physical parts of me haha. Matter can never be destroyed, so all the water in my body, all the nutrients would go back into the Earth.

Ah, yeah. Since we're all made of stardust it's cool. I was mainly just being the depressing jerk I am nothing how worthless I think I am.

haha me too. I cried when I accidently killed a spider once, so the whole survival thing.... I just don't think I'd be able to do it. I'd live off of twigs and berries lol Like what that guy in that movie 127 Hours did... I just.... I don't think I could do something like that either
