Quote from Eeled
Just out of personal preferance, but I'd like to see a "Include/Exclude" option in the advanced search page for the categories =D

Quote from TheLittleE
Not really a bug, but can we get an exclude categories in the advanced genre search?

I was about to bring up the above idea, but it seams it's been brought up before. (I just read through the 13 pages of this thread. cool ) However, there were no response to those suggestions.

I think it would be vary useful to be bale to exclude categories when doing advanced searches. For example, a homophobic person could exclude "LGBT Character in a Non-Yaoi/Yuri Manga", or people uncomfortable with certain types of relationships could exclude "Age Gap" or "Student-Teacher Relationship".

P.S. I love categories a lot! Thank-you so much for adding it. eyes I've found all sorts of lovely manga using categories. I recently discovered that I could also add tags to series, and it makes me happy that I can help out, even if only a bit. shy

I would just point out that in British English, holiday also means vacation. Potential for confusion? How many manga are there that are actually "based around" one holiday? Maybe it'd be better to have separate categories. But bearing in mind many holidays don't show up much in manga, other than Christmas or Japanese holidays like Golden Week... Can't imagine there are many manga that have Hanukkah shown in them, let alone manga that feature it so much it warrants a category.

So, the categories section has been growing a lot, which is good, but it looks like some maintenance needs to be done. I've been working on that today (I'm midway through F right now). It's a little scary, because I always worry that I'm misjudging what others think. So I'm keeping a record of the changes I made (excluding little things like correcting misspelled words, etc.). I'll report them here, so if you have any objections, please share them in this thread (as opposed to PMing me) so that others can discuss it here.

Edit: There were a lot of changes to make, and listing them all was kind of impractical, so I uploaded two text files to the web. Here is a list of all the categories I deleted, and here is a list of merges and other changes.

Anyway, in the future, I'll try to monitor the categories better and delete bad categories when they crop up, rather than having to do another overhaul like this. Now that the overhaul is done, I'm not going to keep a list since (hopefully) there shouldn't have to be a ton of changes all at once anymore.

Trying to help out......
Loli, loli as a subplot, and lolita should be merge

"english version dropped" I don't see the point of having this as a category especially since that description is already on the "english publisher" box.

To mu2020: I'm not sure about tags with "loli" in them all being combined... if it means lolicon, that's already a genre, so of course the tag should be deleted. But if it means a lolita, that's a person who dresses a certain way and tends to act a certain way (as far as I know... I don't know much about this term, to be honest), so that may be a viable category. Anyway, I'll sort through the bunch of loli tags eventually... Or if I'm lucky someone else will do it for me bigrazz

Edit: List of category changes got too long, see my previous post for links to the text files online.

The following categories can be merged or renamed somehow:
Glasses
Meganekko
Bespectacled Protagonist
Bespectacled Character
Bespectacled Seme
Bespectacled Uke

to waftingwish: Bunches of categories like those are hard for me to decide how to deal with... categories that are sort of similar but also sort of different (they all have to do with glasses, but "Glasses" could be a theme rather than meaning just a character who wears glasses, "Meganekko" is a character that not only wears glasses but also usually has a certain type of personality, etc.), and also tags that are [adjective]+[character type] (there are tons of these; some are easy (like "Poor Boy", "Poor Girl", and "Poor Uke" can be combined into "Poor Character/s", since the difference isn't important), but for a lot of them, I haven't thought of a good solution yet). For right now, I'm leaving these for last and doing easier ones first, but I will try to organize them eventually.

Edit: List of category changes got too long, see my previous post for links to the text files online.

Note: I accidentally clicked on the wrong thing and merged "Strong Male Lead" with "Rude Protagonist". Since "Strong Male Lead" had way more entries (~350) than "Rude Protagonist" (~15), the easiest way to fix it was to rename "Rude Protagonist" to "Strong Male Lead", and then individually pick out the ones that were actually supposed to be "Rude Protagonist". So that's what I did; hopefully now everything is back where it belongs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: Okay, I've come up with a set of rules about the problem waftingwish mentioned. Before I make changes according to these rules, I want to see what people think about them. Please look them over and tell me what you think (mainly directed toward staff but other users' comments are welcome, too).

Rules of Thumb for Managaging [adjective]+[character type] Categories

1. merge male and female into character (unless the adj is unusual for a gender)
ex, clumsy male and clumsy female -> clumsy character
feminine male, masculine female, long-haired male can stay
*long-haired female and masculine male can be deleted

2. merge uke and seme into protagonist (unless the adj is unusual for uke/seme or for gender)
ex, clumsy uke and clumsy seme -> clumsy protagonist
straight seme and straight uke can stay
long-haired seme and long-haired uke -> long-haired male
*gay uke and gay seme can be deleted

3. change personality into character
ex, childish personality -> childish character

4. merge hero and heroine into protagonist (unless the adj is unusual for a gender (in which case merge those with plain male/female) or describes a real "hero" (meaning a hero like someone who saves people rather than just protagonist))
ex, anti-social heroine and anti-social hero -> anti-social protagonist
long-haired hero -> long-haired male
legendary hero and super hero/es can stay

5. merge male lead and female lead into protagonist (unless the adj is unusual for a gender, in which case merge those with plain male/female)
ex, stubborn male lead and stubburn female lead -> stubborn protagonist
masculine female lead -> masculine female
feminine male lead -> feminine male
*long-haired female lead can be deleted

6. merge girl and woman into female and merge boy, guy, and man into male (unless the adj is unusual for a child/adult), then check with #1
ex, stubborn woman and stubborn girl -> stubborn female (-> stubborn character)
stubborn boy and stubborn man -> stubborn male (-> stubborn character)

*tags that are obvious, redundant, or otherwise not noteworthy should be deleted

NOTE: All of these rules of thumb change tags that are too specific into more general tags, but there may be times when a tag is too general and needs to be split:
Long-haired protagonist is too general because it "contains" long-haired female lead, a non-noteworthy tag. Therefore long-haired protagonist should be changed to long-haired male lead, which in turn (according to the rules above) should be changed to long-haired male (long-haired boy and long-haired man aren't different enough to be separate, so don't split it any further).
Nekomimi (or cat person) is too general because it contains cat girl/s and cat boy/s, which according to general opinion are different enough to be separate, so nekomimi should be split (however, don't change these further into cat female and cat male**).

NOTE2: These are just rules of thumb, and there may be exceptions:
Anti-hero/heroine should not be merged into anti-protagonist nor split into separate anti-hero and anti-heroine tags, because "anti-hero" is a specific term with its own established meaning.
Genki girl should not be changed to genki character nor genki female, and also a genki boy counterpart tag should not be created, because "genki girl" is a specific term.
**cat girl/s and cat boy/s should not be changed to cat female and cat male: "cat girl" and "cat boy" are accepted terms for this kind of creature (as a consequence, "cat female" and "cat male" sound weird and could even be confused with meaning a normal cat that is female/a normal cat that is male).

Well, ok. I was hesitant to delete the category because I think loli may also be short for lolita (fashion, etc.), and this tag might have been added to some series in that way. Looking at the list of them, though, almost all of them have the genre marked as lolicon, so the majority of them (the tag "instances") are probably safe to delete. Anyway, it's gone.

The category "Unexpected feelings" strikes me as being completely unnecessary. All of those tagged by it are romance / BL / GL manga, but it doesn't make sense to say you 'expected' to fall in love with someone, is it? That'd mean about 80% of the love stories in the database would have to be tagged as such, which doesn't seem necessary at all.
