Okay I've put together a list of manga that include a male romance interest that is unorthodox, or if you like abnormal. I am really into this type of story, so the purpose of this thread is two-fold: to help others who like this type of story as well benefit from the list I've put together, as well as requesting your help in finding more! Now there is one similar thread with a request for such stories, but the responses mix female and male love interests and of course, there is no compilation in a handy list format. I've found that manga with an abnormal/unorthodox female love interest are far more common (at least that is my perception) and get suggested far more. Let's change that! I've added a new category as well and tagged all the manga in this list appropriately, so you can easily find them if you do a search in the category function. The tag is "unorthodox male love-interest". Yeah, it's a mouthful, but I think it is the best way to describe it? I've also made an unorthodox female love-interest tag and already tagged a few titles, but not that many cause I want to focus on the male ones, which I prefer.

Okay so what is an "unorthodox male love-interest"? I am NOT talking about unconventional love interests (e.g. siblings, step-siblings, cousins, intersexuals etc.). What I AM talking about are: demons, robots, spirits, dryads, Gods, aliens, mermaids, androids, werewolves, vampires, humans that can transform into animals or machines or objects and so on and so forth.

The list I've compiled has many different types of unorthodox guys, from mermaids to demons and from androids to Shinigami. Please help me add more! Titles in the list can be (and are already) either shojo or shonen, either one-shots or series, can have the unorthodox guy be the main love interest or a rival (please don't spoil though) and can have the romantic relationship as main part of the story or as a side-thing (as in Inuyasha where the romance was not the main thing of the story).

One more thing before I start with the list: I know there are several Yaoi titles that match these criteria, but please don't add them to this list. I am trying to compile a list of hetero love in this thread. HOWEVER, I know a couple of yaoi titles and I will tag them appropriately in the category list tomorrow. So while the category tag should be used for these titles, Yaoi titles should not make an appearance in this thread.

Here we go:

- +Anima
- Akuma na Eros
- Akuma to Dolce
- Barairo My Honey
- Beast Master
- Black Bird
- Bloodhound
- Bloody Kiss
- Dakishimete! Noir
- F.O.X
- F.O.X II
- Fruits Basket
- Hana to Akuma
- Heaven!!
- Honey Bunny!
- Ikenai Navigation
- InuYasha
- Joousama no Inu
- Kamisama Hajimemashita
- Kanata Kara
- Kindan no Koi de Ikou
- Kindan no Koi wo Shiyou
- Kon no Ki Konoha
- Koucha Ouji
- Kyuuketsu Yuugi
- Love Monster
- Luna Lunatic
- Men Are Wolves?
- Midnight Secretary
- Mugen Spiral
- My Sweet Dragon
- Ningyo Ouji
- Sailor Fuku ni Onegai!
- Sennen no Yuki
- Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume
- Shinigami Lovers
- Shiro no Keiyaku
- Slice of Black Chocolate
- Tasukete! Vampire
- Tenshi Kinryouku
- Tonari no Shugoshin
- Vampire Knight
- Vampire Vampire!
- Vanpu ni Barabara
- Yoroshiku Master
- Zettai Kareshi
- Zoku - Kindan no Koi wo Shiyou

Perhaps "unnatural" would be a better description of what you are trying to convey.

I'm not so sure this is necessary considering the myriad of tags already in existence that include:
Quote
demons, robots, spirits, dryads, Gods, aliens, mermaids, androids, werewolves, vampires, humans that can transform into animals or machines or objects and so on and so forth.

well, first of all, I don't think Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume had any supernatural stuff in it. and then here are a few suggestions:

Bride of the Water God - a deity
Adventure and Trouble Diary - aliens
Vampire Girl - vampire

Well considering that there are a lot of manga that have lets say, demons, but not a romance between a demon and a human, why don't you think it's necessary? One such example would be Yu Yu Hakusho for instance. There is a romance and there are demons, but not a romance between a demon and a human. As such, for people that are interested in this type of story, isn't this distinction a good thing? Or should they actually read every manga that has a demon tag without knowing if said demon/android/alien is romantically linked to any of the characters?

Arianne thanks! I wasn't at all aware of that one. I've added it to my "to read" list ^^

Seimaden demon (former human) and his reincarnated human lover
The Tarot Cafe a witch(former human) and dragon. The dragon takes a shape of a man.
Devil's Bride quite frankly, a devil.

Yeah, considering the fact that demons, vampires, transforming characters and such are in fact fairly orthodox when you're referring to manga. bigrazz

Watashi no Ookami-san - demon
Otogi Moyou Ayanishiki - fox spirit (?)

Waaaaaaah this is wonderful you guys! Aside from The Bride of the Water God which I already knew about but somehow forgotten, the rest are all brand new to me!!

Thanks so much! Hope people can add even more *greedy eyes*. laugh
In the meantime I've updated the category tags for all these new suggestions and removed the mistaken one from Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume.

Akuma no Ororon
D.N.Angel? Not sure on this one.
Dorothy of Oz -- All of them are a bit unorthodox.
Meteor Methuselah --this is pretty famous, I'm sure you've heard of it
Sailor Fuku ni Onegai!
Shina Dark
Shounen Dolls

... yeah.

Also, there seems to be a category of 'unorthodox male love interest'. If you click on 'category' on the side bar and then search for 'unorthodox male love interest', I'm sure you'll get a nice list of them.

^ Divina was the one who made the category~

I find the opposite to be true, at least in shoujo.
I also think that unorthodox should be change to unnatural or supernatural.

To the list add:
Chikyuu Kanrinin
Anti-Gravity Boy
Kieli
Gertrude no Recipe

May I ask how strict you are on the "Hetero" thing? I can think of a series with an intersexed/Hermaphrodite main character(In the female role) falling in love with unorthodox male characters.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
S/He basically starts out as more of a guy, but is almost 100% woman at the end(Breasts, vagina, pregnancy and everything)

Would things like that be allright, or not?

Suki-san no I didn't know of Meteor Methuselah! Thank you so much, I actually didn't know any of your suggestions, also didn't know most of the ones suggested by waftingfish at all! Thank you both! *does a little happy dance*

Waftingfish I agree with both of you about the category thing, unnatural would have been better. But is there a way to change the category name for all the series I've tagged? I've now tagged more than 60 for male leads and more than 20 for female leads... Would be kinda lame if I have to manually do it for all of them again. But I agree completely, it would be much easier for others seeing the category for the first time to comprehend what it's about as well. Please help me if you know of a way to change it all at once?

Vilde yes that sounds good, please suggest!

Wolf Guy - Ookami no Monshou -- werewolf. The romance is not prevalent as of yet though. I haven't looked at the raws, but from the sound of it, there will be just a bit.

Wasurene no Language - Mermaid one shot.

ES - Result of a genetic experiment. Does this count?

Ginban Kaleidoscope - Ghost.
