Alright so you all know what I am talking about I hope. You know, mostly in shonen mangas there is always that one guy that is a karmic disaster. The guy that always trips into women's bodies, or is holding women's underwear when the door opens. Every plan he makes goes absolutely horribly wrong, and everyone hates him, but somehow it all comes out in the wash later. I hate those types. Their incompetence annoys me. I want to see the opposite.

I had enough when I started reading I"s. Somehow this time, I really like the guys sincere and pure attitude. However, I hate the fact that his incompetence makes him a magnet for humiliation and misunderstanding.

An example of things I hate is Mx0. The beginning arc basically happens as "Don't get caught." The Protagonidiot then proceeds to put himself in situations where he almost gets caught dozens of times consecutively. It's almost repulsive.

One thing I like is Girls Saurus. Somehow he gets in all those, "I tripped but my hand is where it shouldn't be," but it's fine because no one really cares.

I want something where the protagonist that can either talk his way out of bad situations or can avoid them at the last second, without the whole plot of the chapter being about him desperately trying to escape them. Either that or people are somehow realistically understanding about how some things are accidents.

Are there any series where you think, "Normally, this guy would have gotten slapped and called a pervert/idiot, but not in this manga."

Or, should I just read I"s while I cry and wish it was different? Does it get better later? I had a whole manga worth of that after 2 chapters.

God I hate that as well. The first time is ok but after a while it just gets boring and I feel sorry for the dude. I can only think of Zippy Ziggy and well i don't think that all the situations are handled smoothly but the lead is just awesome because he is the one that is manipulating everyone into thinking how much of a great guy he is. If he is forced or put into a bad situation he lies with such skill he makes them believe that someone else did it. Just read it and you will see. Though i think there are times when he gets owned by the female lead but he is never humiliated infront of his peers.

Not really sure I should be replying to this because I don't read a lot of shounen (and I never read ecchi), but how about Gamble Fish? And maybe Gintama fits...barely. I don't think either of them (especially the latter) have the protagonist end up in perverted situations- it's more like they can talk themselves out of tight spots; not necessarily those that involve women. I've only read a few chapters of both of these titles, but they seem to have pretty competent male leads- not stupid ones.

Most of the time I don't read shonen but the setup for the romance in I"s seemed good. I had been looking for a good boy chases girl, but the idiocy irritated me so much that I needed something to cleanse my palette. This thread will probably be effective for that however I wish there were some shonen romances that had competent leads. I would rather read something where a competent male works hard toward one girl, instead of a bunch of girls are attracted to an incompetent male for no real reason.

if you want competence then perhaps the following

Countrouble--he is pretty nice and not totally idiotic. so far not going bad
Lilim Kiss--he is really popular, good at studies etc. Also featured on a bishounen magazine.
Kagetora--other girls do fall in love with him but he has eyes only for hime sama.

maybe also Midori no Hibi

Ha, if you are looking for the realistic romance with competent male lead (not a shoujo), than you are looking in the wrong medium. Mangas like that are so rare, you will have better luck drawing one yourself.

In fact I can't even remember the last time I read such a manga. Maybe some of the Gantz qualifies in a way.

I realised than it easier to create the romance you look for in the real life, than to try and find it in the manga.

I think that is because people who know how to attract a girl and who know what a real romance is, don't end up being mangakas.

I"s isn't that bad, theres satisfying bits in there and plenty of agonizing parts to contrast them.. Its not spectacular, but I wasn't dissapointed when I was done with it like I was with kimagure orange road.
