I have grown to LOVE the search engine on this site, seriously, especially the features that allow me to exclude genres I don't like, unscanlated manga or one-shots! YAYNESS!

However, I'd like to have one more feature in the search engine, if possible. A search-by-length option.

Something like (and this is just an idea, there might be another way to do this)... Have 2 text fields that accept numbers as input, in a range. Like, from ___ to ___, where the blanks I've just put in are actually the text fields. The user can then specify what minimum-to-maximum range they want for the length of the manga, like... 1 to 3 volumes or 10-15 volumes. Of course, if the same number is entered twice, it would return a manga of exactly that length (e.g. from 21-21 volumes would return all manga 21 volumes long).

The thing is, I have a real fondness for epics, and I sometimes get frustrated by all the tiny series (a few volumes or even just one) that I come across on my searches. I'm sure that there are others who feel the same - maybe some that also want to find epics, or some that want to avoid them (and only find a short one-volume read they can get through on a public holiday or something), or those that want a manga of a particular length.

Like, there are times when I really want to find shoujo romance epics that are, like, more than 20 volumes long. And you can imagine that it's tiring to sort through all the one-volume or five-volume results, when what I'm actually looking for is a lot longer...

Then again, if it's a weird or unworkable (or unpopular!) request, don't worry. biggrin This was just an idea to improve a search engine that I actually already find pretty awesome. <3

Thanks for listening!

Agreed. I've wished for the ability to filter by manga length as well.

Same here.. it's a great suggestion. Sometimes, I just want to read something lengthy while at other times, I'm looking for just a oneshot. smile I know the "oneshot" part is already fulfilled but the "lengthy series" part isn't.

I think it's a good idea as well. I usually prefer moderately long series (like 5 to 20 volumes), hate over-long (30 + volumes) series and don't really like ones that are only 1 or 2 volumes long.
So, that kind of search feature would be nice.

But- I also get the feeling it might be too much trouble. There's series that are like "__volumes - ongoing", and the 'Status in country of origin' part keeps getting modified. So the actual installment of that feature would probably require a lot of work. And since MU is having problems with funding and all that right now, if this suggestion is ever going to be taken in to consideration, it'll probably take a while yet.

I was just thinking the other day that this would be a great idea when I was looking for longer manga! Although maybe something that would make it easier would be to just have above ~ volumes of manga, since for me at least, the trouble usually comes from when I'm looking for longer manga but only get short ones in return, not the other way around. This way it could accommodate ongoing manga as well. But then, I know there are people who want to read manga that are not too long but not too short as well so...

I'm glad so many others are welcoming of this idea! However, calstine has a good point...

Yeah, I was deeply saddened when I heard that B-U was having problems with funding due to being kicked off of Google Ads. sad Still, I'd like to say (for what it's worth!) that if B-U ever has to resort to donation-based funding, I would be very happy to donate - as would many others on this site, I daresay. We've spent so long on this website and in the forums and searching for manga; not only is B-U the best scanlation resource for us, but it's also a community and a kind of second home. *blush* Well, I mean - yeah, since it's a second home, I wouldn't hesitate to donate to keep it going. eyes

But back to the search feature... As for the # of ongoing volumes continuing to get modified - that would be harder to implement, but not if pointers are used to keep up with the shifting values... I think. (Isn't that being done already?) Gah, I dunno. It's been ages since I even looked at a coding book... And I'm no longer computer literate in any way that actually matters. roll

Only if it's workable at this stage should this search feature be adopted, of course! Kudos to the B-U staff for keeping things going under trying conditions. We love you all.

Um, this sounds good, but I think this was suggested sometimes before and turned down...
Yah, here they are:
# of Volumes Search (there's a suggestion on how to do it in this one)
Lengthwise Search (got redirected to the next one)
Searching by Length + Genre (turned down because of complications)

The feature sounds really nice though, so I was trying to think if there exists a way to implement this... maybe the search tool could only use the first number that appears in the volumes field for a manga (ex., for Buddha: "14 Volumes (Complete); 12 Volumes (Bunko); 6 Volumes (Bunko); 8 Volumes (Bunko)," 14 would be used; for Death Note: "12 Volumes + 1 Extra Volume (Complete)," 12 would be used; for Mimia Hime: "Oneshot (Complete); 2 Volume (Series, Ongoing)," 2 would be used), in order to bypass the multiline volume entries, extra volume, and oneshot-turned-series problems.
