Yeah, there's quite a lack of female characters. It wouldn't be bad to have at least one more important female character, not as a love interest though. That really wouldn't fit into the story:

I feel that adding some girl and throwing in some 'romance' would just be a huge failure.

Why would kids be lusting after each other, and why should they lust after women at such an age?

Let them be. There doesn't always need to be a female in the mix, and I'm not even someone who likes yaoi. Bro relationships can be so amazing and touching, they remind me of father and son relationships, but even closer.

Let the two boys be friends, not everyone is looking for romance in life.

Lol no need to hamfistedly throw in some random love interest when its not necessary.

Gon seems to like girls but Killua might really be gay though. 100% serious. If it were any other author I might just wave most of it off as unintentional subtext. Not with Togashi though. Togashi has a penchant for expositing atypical relationships and gender roles. Level E, YYK, and HxH all do this.

Also find it a bit disingenuous that people shrug off that idea entirely. Yeah, they could just be really great friends. That's fine and cool. But the alternative shouldn't be treated as something silly and insulting either.

Granted they're children now so they're probably to young for anything to be legitimately romantic, but in future... just saying. Killua has been pretty much been shown to be in love with Gon. Seriously if Killua were a female character I have no doubt that most all of you would be on that pairing ship right now. Nobody would be advocating the "too young for romance" defense lol. The childhood friend/love interest archetype/trope is as old as fuck.
