Well, you know how it is- in half of the manga out there (particularly shounen, but also a good amount of shoujo), we see 'best friends' becoming mortal enemies because one of them betrayed the other / killed his family / stole his girlfriend etc., etc.
What I'm looking for is a manga which is the exact opposite of that- one in which two people (or even more than two- the number doesn't matter) who were previously enemies or rivals become friends / allies after getting to know each other better, and realizing that they'd rather co-operate than fight.

In short -

- The individuals involved should have been serious enemies / rivals for a considerable period of time. And, the story should depict that part of their lives to a noticeable extent.

- They must eventually become honest friends / allies. Please no fake friendships or alliances that last only two pages or so. Their feelings must not be pretentious.

-They must have absolutely NO romantic feelings towards each other. Please do not recommend 'enemies turning into lovers' manga. I already know most of those anyway.

-Please note that I do not read manga under the following genres; Adult, hentai, yaoi, yuri, shotacon, lolicon, smut, ecchi, harem, reverse harem. (I doubt such manga will have what I'm looking for, but better safe than sorry, right? ^^)

- Romance, shounen-ai and shoujo-ai acceptable ONLY if it is not the primary focus of the plot. Also, the love affair should not be between the enemies-turned-allies.

-Also, please don't recommend mainstream shounen - everyone knows about those, don't they?

I only example I can think of right now is Game x Rush - but this isn't a very good one because the rivalry wasn't serious at all; the friendship was adorable, though.

I know I'm being terribly picky, but please do recommend me something!

maybe Burning Hell--though its like weird they are both quite crazy and are prepared to backstab eachother. i don't think of them as friends yet though. both guyz so no romance between them..well try and c

As for Dragon Ball - well, it's mainstream shounen, and I'm not really interested in stories where they do nothing but fight day in and day out. I like fighting, but not in excess.
Berserk - Umm...no, I don't think so. All those rape scenes are too much for me to handle

Two Flowers For the Dragon has the two romantic rivals become friends and allies over the long-term. It's a pretty serious rivalry, and it actually extends even into the (eventual) friendship...

It's anime, but you should watch Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. That's basically what it's about.

This might fulfill some of your requirements.

Arata Kangatari - Two guys, with the same names and similar appearances get swapped between their worlds. The modern Japan Arata in the fantasy-like world must get 12 Shous to "submit" to him in order to stop the bad guys from further altering the truth.

Some of these Shous will see this Arata as a threat, as a traitor, as an enemy, or some kind of value of entertainment because of their loyalties to the Princess. So, he has to prove his own worth in order to gain their trust. There is one particular Shou, who didn't get his soul sucked in, but doesn't really trust this Arata too much. Over time, of course, this Shou will open up. (It's almost like DGM's Allen and Kanda's relationship, perhaps...)

Edit:

King of Cards - Girl vs. rival card playing people. Some will play her for fun, for her special card, over love, or for other things. Unique shoujo. It's licensed by CMX (which is going soon... )
