Im just wondering about how to licence manga and what would it cost. Do one pay royalty or just a fixed sum? The thought of about how much it would cost to start an own company and translating/licencing manga has popped into my head more than once...

Honestly, you'd have to talk to a foreign publishing company to get any details, and they most likely wouldn't even quote you any kind of numbers without you already being part of a publishing company.

I'll tell you this much, we aint talking petty cash here. Depending on the title, I'm guessing it can be quite a chunk of money to get the licensing rights.

This is really intresting, i would be really thankfull to anybody who could post some knowledge.

An intresting by thought, the japanese comic market is much bigger than the american, with france as a distant third. So i guess for them licensing to usa or germany or whatever must be more or less peanuts. Or am i wrong here?

Ok, so let's suppose that you can afford the 10~100k necessary for that random manga/manwha nobody cares about... do you really think you'll be able to sell enough of them to make it worth the money? I really don't think so...
But anyway I wish you good luck with your project!

Hey , 10k aint that much. I mean, sure, for me it is, but people spend 10k on all sorts of shit. Imagine some comic fan who is already 35 and has a good salary, who buys a series all for himself. Just so that he and nobody alse cal legally read it in english.
A dream come true, all you have to do then is find and shot anybody who starts scanslating it.

Wow, that's ingenious - I'm no comic fan or anything, but getting away with a murder or two is definately worth it. Time to start becoming rich.

I'll be shooting them bastards with two big named pistols - Cease and Desist.

That would be like goddamn maniac heaven to me.
