its all fairly subjective really but i doubt asian girls have it any harder than other girls, especially when you consider that both demographics are constantly bombarded with what is the ideal 'image' for a girl in the media. granted its a bit more obvious with asian girls, especially those in countries like South Korea and Japan where making yourself more 'western' is the ideal but realistically you will find girls in other countries going through the same thing, like in america where girls in the teens go for breast enlargements which is ridiculous.

i concur with what the others say and ask your friend has she actually asked guys whether she is beautiful now or after the surgery

fyi i am an asian dude is surrounded by asian girls all the time who constantly put themselves down even when its clearly a lie what they are saying

You're friend shouldn;t be forced to do ANYTHING she doesn't want to. Parental, and societal, expectations aren;t limited to asian though. Society wants western girls to be super skinny with large breast etc etc etc. We get bombared with pictures of supermodels and magazine tell us designer gear is a must. It's all completely ridiculous.

I'm supposed to have highlighted, layered hair. Even though my hair is long, is should be cut and extentions used instead apparently. A permanent tan so I glow even in winter (tanning booths are prefered despite the cancer risk), fake nails are a must as well. I should be decked out in designer gearm carry a handbag large enough to fit a house in, and like only genetically screwed toy dogs that I can dress up like a doll. I should be borderline anorexic with unnaturally large breasts. It's just nonsense. I'm too busy living life to worry about how other's perceive me.

This thread demostrates that no matter where you are in the world, the media dictates what is considered pretty and parents put pressure on their child as a matter of course. If you friend seriously wants the surgery, has thought hard about it and is confident she won't regret it then fine. But it is her body and her decision, if she's doing it for anyone other than herself it is just wrong.

What I've known is exactly the opposite:
Asian girls want to have plastic surgery, but their parents don't approve of it.

I assure you, your friend's parents are rare among Asian parents. Most Asian parents are conservative therefore they don't usually accept plastic surgery easily.

Sorry, my sister is here and I have been subjected to shows like One Tree Hill, The Hills, and Gossip Girl. Someone put me out of my misery.

You poor thing. Sincerely.

I think women (or people in general) should be able to do what they want.
So if your friend wants to have the surgery, she should go for it.
Of\r she doesn't; it's sad that her parents would pressure her with something like that..

PS: Sorry for the nitpicking, but it really gets on my nerves when people say asian when they only mean one specific group.

Is that really that big of a deal? The difference is implied by inference...

I think it's the same thing as saying the Welsh, Irish, or Scottish that they are English.

No, it's not. At all.
Saying asian when you mean just Japanese or Chinese is analogous to saying European and meaning only let's say, western Europe (France and Spain and such).

Saying the Welsh, Irish and Scottish are English is like saying Japanese, Koreans and so forth are all Chinese. Completely different level of presumption.

Yes, but that Western European is still European, just like the Eastern Asian is still Asian. When you say something like "That European makes crepes," you use your context clues to understand that person probably is referring to a French person.

One thing I'm wondering: do most people outside Asia think that "asian" equals chinese/korean/japanese? Cause there are others you know, Indian, Southeast asian, arab, etc. And since east asian are the only ones with single eyelid they're the only ones who'd do the surgery, other asians don't need to.
About the double eyelid surgery, well I lived in Korea about two years ago and it seemed that double eyelid surgery was a common thing there. You could even do it in a beauty salon, no need to go the doctor. And it's not just the girls, many boys/men also had it. Though usually it's not forced by the parents since they wanted it themselves due to the "beauty image" most koreans (at least the ones I knew) had.

PS: Sorry for the nitpicking, but it really gets on my nerves when people say asian when they only mean one specific group.

the word asian can be confusing sometimes
if youre talking about the continent, then its china, korea, japan, phillipine, taiwan, vietnam, india, arab, malaysia, mongolia, signapore, indonesia, pakistan, syria, iraq, even russia, and etc....

but if youre talking about the people, then to alot of folks they think china, korea, japan, taiwan, vietnam, mongolia, signapore, etc.... but americans usually call them oriental people, though some people take offense to that (though me, i dont know how to react to it so im neutral), so they just make it simple and call them asians... and other countries by their respective names like indian, arab, subasian, etc...

but china, korea, and japan just the center image of what asians are standardly visualized as...
i dont mean that in a good or bad way...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------

also, about the eye surgery, it isnt as common as the media or peers make out to be...
but then again its not rare either, its just something one out of a bunch of people would do...
and eye surgery isnt limited to asians really, there are hispanic, black, and westerners that do it too, like just to fixate their sides or shapes. bigger eyes doesnt nessasarily mean more attractive (i say shape ) , but i guess thats just how some asian girls think.

surgery is a global issue. woman of all races resort to fixing their lips, nose jobs, chins, face, hips, body, breasts, leg length, etc.... id say its more common in the first world countries...
more money, more access to superficial products, eye lining , make ups, and body adjustment... its saddens me that nobody looks natural anymore...
but i believe statistics goes more towards america, mexico, brazil, japan, sweden, taiwan, spain, germany, and france seems to have the highest rate... which i believe is the 2009 poll...
im not trying to bad mouth other races, but im just trying to point out that eye surgeries and surgeries in general isnt restricted to asia...

Ha, you can't take one girl's situation and apply that to every single Asian girl. My parents don't care. It makes me beautiful!

I think you aren't overreacting. You're being a concerned friend.

Edit: Woah, this is an old topic. How/why did it get revived? O_o;;

Ooops sorry, I didn't know that people differentiate between asian and south asian. dead
It's not just the eyelids getting some makeover. My Korean friend told me about her friend who had a jaw reduction surgery. Right after she had that surgery, her matchmaking were successful and she got married. The thing is, when she had a baby, the baby had her original jaw, the exact same jaw..

BAHAHAHAH That's a hilarious fail.Talk about false advertisement.

When I was in elementary, basically everyone wanted eyelid surgery. They made up their own "ways" of making them, I had no idea what it was for so I bsaically turned down every offer saying "i'll do it for you". And then... later on... half of the peoples' made up ways had no effect whatsoever. 1/4's ruined their eyes, or somplace near (they actually pierced their skin with hand-knives) and the other 1/4... They used tape with some sort of metal glued on... Their eyes showed a tint of blackeye for like a couple weeks.Lol

I've heard a story - no idea if it's true or not - of a Korean (this was specifically mentioned in the story as I heard it) couple who had a baby, & as it got older the husband became more & more certain that his wife had cheated on him because the baby looked nothing like either of them. Eventually she 'fessed up to having extensive cosmetic surgery & the baby looked a lot like she did before the surgeries. none
