Okay, so I've read a few harem manga, and while I don't have anything against the general concept (you know, loads of girls being in love with the same guy), I find it a bit annoying that all harem that I've read seems to follow some kind of "how to do it"-guide. All of them have fanservice. All of them are lighthearted comedies (with a few serious moments). The guy that the series revolve around are (almost) always a shy, nice, weak, timid, socially retarded underdog, completely oblivious of the fact that all females within a 5 kilometer radius want to french kiss him. Also, you can usually figure out what woman he's gonna end up with in the finale after reading the first chapter or so.

Anyway, I'm looking for something different. Like a serious, gritty harem. Or a main character that can't be filed under "loser". Or a twist ending in which he marries a dog. It just has to be a bit different.

Examples? Well, umm... Ranma ½, maybe? Okay, so it contains LOTS of EXTREME(sort of) fanservice (uncensored nipples!), and a whole lot of comedy, but the main character, Ranma, is at least different, since he's not much of an underdog. He's mean, he's arrogant, he's strong, he's a bit snotty and he's not really the kind of guy you'd like to have as a friend. But most of all, he's VERY much aware of the fact that he's popular, something he's not late to (ab)use.

So, know any harem manga that is "different"? Whatever. Anything will do.

Sora no Otoshimono: The main character is quite perverted...
The World God Only Knows: Well it's just different, worth a try.

Can't think of any more right now smile

The World God Only Knows -

Yes, it's a harem, but he's an expert in love. It's really hard to describe, but basically, it's just that he isn't interested in the harem girls. He is fully aware that the girls like him(when he walks into a bathroom where one of the girls is going to the bathroom, he stops there to analyze the situation.) The manga is also extremely funny.

KissXSis -

Harem from the beginning, the protagonist is fully aware of that, and he enjoys their moves. Beware though, Borderline.

Sankarea -

Great manga, and it is a harem since both his cousin and Rea show affection for him.

Tama Hiyori is on the route towards harem from what I hear/see. It's...different.
Mouse- main character usually acts shy/quiet, but is actually a master thief and... well it's different too.
Aiki- not really a focus on romance, but the main character is constantly surrounded by women. He definitely does not have anything in common with the archetypal harem lead.

I agree it's a great manga, but 2 girls does not a harem make.

Hayate no Gotoku- he's somewhat strong, not a loser, slightly has a twisted logic. It's worth a try.

Who knows, maybe another love interest will be introduced later on. I mean, in KissXsis, there were two girls since the beginning, but only at about chapter 20 or so did another love interest pop up.
