I can't speak for the game, but you need to give more than one hour for that. FFVIII didn't even introduce the heroine until a good 5-10 hours (I forgot). However, it has one of the best love stories I've seen in a video game. And yea, FFVIII is my recommendation. Really epic story with a great love plot.

I don't agree with Magna Carta for PS2 if thats the one you meant. I hated the ending for it.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
The last minute hook up with the sister was just terrible. She should have joined much earlier. I couldn't even get to like her. She felt like a cheap replacement for Reith.

what I liked:
-Final Fantasy 8, 9
-Odin Sphere
-Ar Tonelico 1 & 2 (you can pick a girl for the mc.)
-Growlanser Generations (^)
-Shadow Hearts + Shadow Hearts Covenant <-In that order (very light)
-Disgaea 2
-La Pucelle

i would definitely say ff9. besides the plot, the cut scenes are absolutely gorgeus, and the music is stunning.
