I'm not very well-versed in shounen, but what I have read in the genre seems to imply that there are a great many male protagonists who must fight and become stronger through a series of trials, tournaments, sports matches, fights or personal challenges. This is a common plot, yes?

Well, I want a shounen (or maybe even a seinen) manga/anime where the protagonist is a female, and has the same growth curve involving fighting skills, sports skills or personal challenges. The focus should be on her personal growth and her courage, ability or failure in the face of her challenges.

I would also prefer it if the manga was NOT ECCHI - mature content is okay, but not content that is obviously just meant to be fanservice/eyecandy. (Unless the rest of the manga is really, really deep and makes up for it, I guess? Lol. Sorry; nothing annoys me more than pointless fanservice.)

It'll be even better if the female protagonist is not romantically involved with anyone (and stays that way for as long as possible), but subtle hints at romance are okay.

So... Any takers? biggrin

Oh, yeah! Lol, I've been reading Claymore for so long I've even stopped thinking about it in the context of recs, but... Yes, that definitely qualifies. Thanks for reminding me! smile

And Guardian of the Sacred Spirit sort of does, too... Even though she was already pretty badass to begin with, but she becomes even better (or more mature, I guess?) as the result of the challenges she faces while trying to protect that royal kid.

I think you may have already read some of these (oh how I wished you made your amazingly long lists public laugh ):

Teppuu definitely
Sengoku Strays
Change 123 <==although I normally despise ecchi, this is one of the rare series where I can tolerate it because of the good storyline wink

I guess what you're looking for is

Airmaster

it's got an anime
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=634

and a manga but it's not completely translated.

also Seirei no Moribito is a good choice, which has a good anime as well.

Damn, how could I forget GUNNM. it's pretty much a definition of what you're looking for

Eheheh. biggrin

I don't actually have lists to make public. (Shock! Horror!) laugh Lol, the reason for it is that I have a brain like a sieve, and I totally keep forgetting the storylines of all these manga, so even if I had a list, it would eventually become meaningless to me. It would just be names without any notion of what they MEAN, you know? Like, what the stories actually are.

Yes, my memory is just that bad. I only remember the most amazing titles (if that); I tend to forget all the rest.

Plus, I like for my threads to be topic-related resources, so I don't want other people to miss out on titles just because I may have read them. I'd still like as many recommendations as possible, so that others can benefit from them as well. eyes

Thank you so much, CatzCradle! I especially appreciate your including that little "disclaimer" with Change 123, lol. It had always seemed like an interesting manga w/ the multiple personalities, but I avoided reading it precisely because of the ecchi - you have allayed my fears! (Question: Is the romance subtle or overstated?)

Thanks also to farkenell and johngen!

Aww... That's too bad~ ;_; I totally would've loved to check out all the stuff you've read bigrazz

Yes, that was one of the main reasons I started reading Change 123 as well, haha.

Hmm... I would say the romance levels is kinda "in-between"? I mean, both the (main) girl and guy are normally slow/shy, and I can't really say they do much together. But protecting the guy is one of the main reasons she fights, and they definitely do care about one another later on. So I would say it's alright? But still more noticeable than the other two titles I mentioned before. roll

Seconding Soul Eater because it's an amazing manga, even though there are actually several main characters.

Maybe Kurohime since it's the only battle mange female protagonist I can think of, but there's a ridiculous amount of fan-service and romance develops pretty early on, so it probably doesn't work XD

Also maybe 1/2 Prince, though she plays a guy in virtual reality and there isn't much time put into "leveling up."

On the more sporty/game-y side of things there's Ice Revolution, Saki, Chihayafuru (okay, so it's josei, but from what I can tell it seems to spend an inordinate amount of time on the game), Shoujo Fight, Dance! Subaru (though she seems to be the type that gets by on sheer talent, rather than working her way up), and Nononono

The last three are seinen.

Slayers, my all time favorite. The main couple is a 16 year old girl who travels the world in search for new spells, and adventures. She is already pretty strong, known as the "Bandit-Killer Extraordinaire" or "Dragon Slayer". Though she hasn't really killed anyone. I think? She is a very funny, happy person, who loves her food. She be pissed at you like crazy if you make fun of her figure. Along the way, she learns new spells, meets new people, ie monsters, chimeras, sorcerers, idiots, etc.

This series is original based on a novel saga, but have been made into an anime and few manga seires.
