Well, the map does say they don't have to travel to another gate. The little arrows outside the triangle say that anyway. As for the second question I've no idea.

In case you haven't noticed, the little arrows going in a loopy like fashion on the outside of the triangle means the water flows out. Franky's coup de vent took them a long distance but they can easily just sail out from the triangle. The triangle is meant to keep people from coming in, I don't remember them saying you can't leave once you enter the triangle (it'd be pretty stupid to keep your marines in there with no way out too).

Leaving isn't a problem, going in is. That's why they say people are lost if they've passed through the gates since you can't enter from anywhere else (safely) other than the gates. none


*GodDelusion's right, Sanji closed the gate while they sailed the other way out...The gate was there and it opened but none of the ships made it through during the chaos and then it was closed.

They never went through the gate. It was only closed to cause the whirlpools to appear to create distraught among the ships. They escaped by going around the waterfall.
