 No they are not separate continents, that's why they are called America, though it is normal to specify if you live in the North, South or the Central part. I can tell because I live here.

They are seperate continents because they sit on different tectonic plates.
If you're not convinced, look up North America and South America in a dictionary and the entries will tell you that North America is a continent and South America is a continent as well.
