I definitely used to do that, until I got desperate and read a few manga that had awful summaries, but were of the genre I liked. Since then, I've gotten into the habit of checking the scanlation group as well as the summary, because there are times when, although the summary is hideous, the group does awesome work. It just happened that they didn't write up a synopsis, so someone else did.
Also, I agree with the posters who said that the One Piece summary turned them off, and go even further and say that the art repulsed me too, for the longest time. Then, for some reason, I dled doujin of it, found that the characters appealed to me, and started reading. Instant hook.
Sometimes, I think there ought to be a mandatory class for scanlators. Summary Writing 101!
