Some series has many groups scanalating...and it seems that there are some rivality/hostillity/pride between groups. They dont want ppl to use thir raws and tls and stuff...
What i dont understand, why not just work together and release more...like hsdk with eternalblue and illuminati that are doing the same project....but there are countless others....

Rivalry between groups for the sake of e-fame is the worst. They race to release as fast as possible and spew out low quality stuff with low quality translations. It's part of the reason why I stopped reading Naruto, the behaviour of some of the scanlators sickened me.

I can understand groups working on the same series and refusing to work together due to a difference in opinion. For example, one group may prefer a less literal translation and doesn't translate SFX, another group may take a more literal approach to translating etc. Like how fansubbers have difference approaches to how they do things.

Ah, this topic...You just HAD to mention HSDK, eh?

Some groups just don't like joints. (I asked Scum-Scans about Air Gear joints and that's how they replied.) Like roxybudgy said, other groups don't like how the rivals do scanlations. Other groups just ignore their rivals and keep going slow and steady with good quality stuff. And of course, it's always possible that there are secret agreements between groups~

Easy to say but it's really hard to apply it.

Not everyone like each other. bigrazz

And this kind of working together thing always cause problems. Some group will depend on the other group and vice versa to do the things and in the end nothing get done. biggrin

I wont go as far as to to say there is rivalry. Its a fine line between pride and preference. Some groups just dont like the way other groups do it. Some groups like the way they do things and like to keep the style they do it. But as for me I just dont like added pressure from joints. Its fine if there is a medium between the 2 groups. Like maybe a common scanner/translator/admin. But other than that if one fails in expectations of another its just gonna be pointless. And instead of better friends its gonna be a sour relationship as samsters mentioned. Scanlations AS FAR AS WE DO IT is free. Its not a product we sell to make money outta. No point fighting over something that we enjoy doing as a hobby lol.

its really a shame isn't it... but i guess not everyone can get along...

i can understand why they wouldn't like sharing their stuff though.. they want credit for their own work.. especially if they put a lot of effort into it...

and about working together... i think that too many people working together will cause more problems and decrease efficiency... more arguments arise, more conflicting opinions... etc

also.. despite it being a bad thing, rivalry tends to speed up scanlating process... since there's the incentive to release first and "gain more e-fame?" (am i wrong about that)... >_>.... it sounds awful... but i still think this is somewhat true... competition can be both good and bad...

oh ya.. what's hsdk

My group name was mentioned ._.?

Okay, first, just for starters... My group has enough joints to sink a ship (Another new project will have a joint in the next few weeks too...) so we're fine for the time being in terms of joints.

Second, I don't have any problems with "rival" groups. I mean, my group was bashed for working on Gantz & Naruto by FF7799 (The community embarrassment) for "stealing" his group's project (Whereas he "stole" it from other groups; Go figure) but whatever. Being insulted by people who have as many IQ points as they do have of fingers doesn't really bother me that much. I mean, I do have problems with groups that steal the licensed versions of the mangas by scanning the English releases by TokyoPop/DarkHorse/WhateverCompany. Then I dislike the 74893749283 "groups" doing 666Satan but have no idea how to edit, typeset or almost anything scanlation-related. But, then again, if they're having fun, then I have no problem with it. People who work on scanlations do it for fun, and that's all that counts.

Coming back to FF7799 for a second--I think it's a real joke how he really goes on every week to say "We need money to continue doing Bleach/Naruto scanlations." No you fucking don't. You don't need a single cent to do scanlations, you scamming fuck. Now I know I'm just ranting so back on topic~

Third, my group (Illuminati-Manga) isn't dependant on what other groups do. If my groups wants to start doing Naruto from volume 01 up to the current chapter, we'll do it.

"Yeah but it's already been scanlated, what's the point?"

What's your point? You're looking from a single point of view: A greedy leecher's point of view. We don't do scanlations because we want leechers to be happy. We do scanlations because we want to.

That being said, enjoy the scanlations ~ With or without a joint.

In truth as I see it, scanslators probably do a LOT of the work they do on scanslations out of love. Because I practically see almost none that actually ask for donations anymore (or they ask for bandwidth donation or manga scans) so that means the manga and plus the time spent working on the scanlation came out of their own pocket and their own time. This group also sounds like Tazimoto (spelling is probably wrong. But I know there's even a forum page called mangaonline that has rung him out on that he's lying about needing money) if they keep doing this. But I guess we sort of have to wonder why people keep donating, because it would end up being that one is paying for their manga in the end. :/ I dunno.

True, scanslating is really suppose to about a few things when it started up which was to have US companies notice manga titles that were overlooked, sharing manga with others who might not be able to access it (i.e. can't read Japanese and can't get the Japanese books), and having fun because otherwise perhaps the group will just want to give up and quit one day without it.

I would see it as extra work, but if your crew doesn't mind scanslating Naruto from volume 1, chapter 1 even though it's already out there, that's your choice. ^^; It just doesn't necessarily seem like the best use of resources for the community overall, but then again, if you choose to go that route it's your choice. Although there's probably some cases where this was a good thing as a reader because maybe when volume 1, chapter 1 was released by someone else it was LQ, but then the new version is better. smile

Haha, don't you wish you could change the header now? ;)

But "rivalry" was a really strong choice of words. And there are some egos going around with some scanslation groups so not the best choice. But ah well, you got you answer and plus some extra info. ;)

The fact is, you don't need a single cent to do scanlations. Maybe 4-5-6 years ago, you would of needed money to do scanlations, but honestly, not that much. A site to host your manga and money to buy the actual books to scan (These aren't expensive AT ALL if you have someone in Japan buying them from specific stores). That's it.

These days, you have rapidshare, imageshack, and all of the similars sites of the like to host your files. You have Winny, Share with so many scanned raws of so many different series. You don't need money for scanlations anymore.

Unless you think that time = money, and you're spending time doing manga, then why the fuck are you doing this? Go work at TokyoPop and make profit from there on.

Actually, we are contributing to the community by doing Naruto volume 01. We are offering our version of Naruto volume 01 to the community. Whether people will download it or not is none of my concern, it just gives them another option in case they need one.

Doing vol01 of Naruto just won't have the same contribution to the community as a scanlation of, say, volume 01 of (Insert unscanlated manga), though...

No, we won't, don't worry.

I have a lot of free time, but I'm not that free.

Much rather work on SJG or FMP.
