Just wondering how many manga readers are Japanophiles and if you have to be one to read manga?

Not really the word otaku in the west usualy just stands for someone who likes anime or manga maybe japanese games too though it doesn't stand for someone who likes japanese music or sports etc.

You don't have to be into manga to be a Japanophiliac, just as you don't have to be a Japanophiliac to read manga. There are plenty of reasons to be into Japan itself.

Many Americans find themselves drawn to it for these reasons among others:

Fashion
Anime
Manga
Food
Music
Dramas
Shinto
Shrines

While manga is still listed there, its one amongst eight. Manga and anime are the most popular forms of Japanese entertainment outside of Japan. It's safe to say that most recent Japanophiles will be drawn to it because of these reasons, but not all are.

no... i like manga and anime, and i self studied some japanese, but i love my country, and my personality and attitude are completely israeli... ill die bofore calling ppl by their last name or use polite speech, id rather humus over anything else, and that distant atmosphere between genders is totally off my style. also, i much rather using hebrew over any other language...

I do read manga sometime depending on the mood, but I am also an Artist and a Pianist and I work full time and the time on my hands are cut short, but I enjoy watching anime and reading manga too. I don't know about everyone else but I play cvs2 mvc2 tkn5 dr and gg 3s too after awhile. I do study a bit of japanese a year back but I stopped for a while, and I feel like I need to go back.

no, i wouldnt say im a japanophile. i just like manga, anime, food, and games from japan. but then again, i like manga and anime from any other country, food from wherever, and any game that's good, so i guess im just specifying into a branch of what i like. =/ but food is my main priority. i love tasting different cuisines biggrin so i wouldnt call myself a japanophile :]

Hm. I'm not exactly sure. Some people would categorize me as a Japanophile, some wouldn't. I surely like anime and manga, Japanese music, food and poetry, I'm trying to learn Japanese and I find Japanese history interesting >.>
I guess, I'm a Japanophile in some extent. I surely would love to go there and maybe live there for some time - their culture and day-to-day life suits me totally. Well, maybe besides 6 days long working week >.<
So, seriously I don't know. Probably will vote for yes.

Asian music includes Japanese... although I try to stay away from it so I won't become a J-lover.
