Hey, Recently I began reading gay themed books. Not yaoi or bl manga or graphic novel. Actual novel. And not erotic literature, ok? lol keep your mind out of the gutter.

So one book I read was Dream Boy by Jim Grimsley.

As you can see a 4.5 out of 5 stars from 171 reviews mean it's a pretty damn good book. I read most of it, and I have to say it is. There's also a movie based on it, which is fairly accurate but short.

Summary:

Gay teen romance about two high school students, Nathan a quite shy young boy and Roy an older boy whose popular among the school body. They are in the same school. Now Roy drives the school bus and then go to school so he sees Nathan first and last every day. He befriends Nathan and they started getting close after Nathan tutors Roy in English essay. They have some intimate scenes and the novel keep telling us about Nathan's distant mother and father.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Later we found out Nathan was constantly sexually molested and raped by his drunk father. And when Nathan and Roy were intimate, Nathan made moves that made Roy suspicious. Roy questions Nathan where Nathan learned to do all this and became angry.

During one night Nathan ties a string at the door of his bed room and in the middle of his sleep, his dad trips on the string. Nathan then rushes out the door and decided to spent the reminder of this nights in the grave yard where Roy and him hanged out.

One night Roy finds Nathan and offers Nathan a place to sleep in Roy's barn house. Thus their relationship mends and Roy no longer question Nathan about the details. Roy decides to take Nathan on a camping trip to a haunted house with Roy's other two friend. One of Roy's friend is Randy, a chubby kid. The other friend is Burke, a strong muscular and hairy guy who once beat up an ex marine.

While visiting the abandoned haunted house, Randy and Burke catches Nathan getting oral from Roy. Roy leaves embarrassed and leaves Nathan alone. Later Burke knocks out Nathan, carries him to the top floor where he beats Nathan and force Nathan to give him oral Later Burke rapes Nathan, and Nathan remembers the same way his dad treated him through out the years. After Burke finishes, Burke strikes Nathan twice on the head with a chair handle.

Nathan feels his heat crack open and starts to bleed and faint. Now, from Nathan's perspective Roy stands over his body, crying. The rest is a little blurry as whether it was Nathan's imagination or Roy's imagination or divine intervention or actual event, but Nathan comes back to life after the funeral ceremony and Roy sees Nathan in the forest. Roy runs towards Nathan and they escape into the forest. They rests near each other until the leaves bury them in half. And Roy says they should head North and never come back.

From my own perspective on this ending:
Spoiler (highlight to view)
So I think Nathan didn't die, he was just wounded really badly. He later recovers a bit and had enough energy to walk out of the crime scene and see Roy. In the book, while embracing in the last scene, Roy sees fresh blood on Nathan's head, meaning Nathan is slowly dying. So at the end, Nathan says he will rest on the floor for a while and they embrace each other and watch the leaves fall. Obvious to me that Nathan died now, really. And Roy who knows.

p.s. I'm not sure where I was suppose to put this.....move if fit. Sorry.

ALSO: These electronic copies are found online through google search. I'm not distributing them, I didn't upload them. They are just there on the internet. If you have to problem with these distributions, contact the site itself and ask them who uploaded the files.

I read many books of Anne Rices "The Vampire Chronicles" and there is many subtext and some openly gay or bi characters like Armand who was the lover of some roman artist and David who is only interested in young men
In the german wikipedia it is also explict menitoned that most of the romance is male-male instead of male-female.
english wikipedia about the main character:
Quote
Lestat is portrayed in the books as being bisexual, and has male and female lovers as both a vampire and a mortal. He is attracted to whomever most interests him at the time. Most of his early experiences are with male companions; he himself explains this by saying the women in previous centuries simply weren't as interesting as men. Later in the series, Lestat offhandedly mentions that he is frightened of women and finds them extremely and egregiously distracting.

Also since the vampires can´t be sexually stimulated their love is mostly platonic and they grow very fond of people they love. It is really like reading shonen-ai

for those who don´t know about it: the first book is "interview with the vampire" which got a famous move adaption.

I saw interview with a vampire....I thought it was totally gay lol. I wish they would start kissing instead of fighting though sad

Also, Anne Rice, omg, all the girls back in my high school adore her books.

Really? I don't remember any mention of that in Bram Stoker's Dracula...

Well, if you're looking for novels like that, then
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner Series:
1. Luck in the Shadows
2. Stalking Darkness
3. Traitor's Moon
4. Shadows Return
5. White Road

Has homosexual main characters.
You don't really see it in the first book, but in the following books it appears.

It is actually quite a good series.

The only one I've read is At Swim, Two Boys

http://www.amazon.com/At-Swim-Two-Boys-Novel/dp/0743222954/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8& qid=1294795743&sr=8-1

I picked it up because I like Irish literature, particularly stuff that deals with British colonialism and Irish nationhood, which this does. And also because of the title reference to Flann O'Brien's At Swim-Two-Birds (which is an insane book and nothing like At Swim, Two Boys)

http://www.amazon.com/Swim-Two-Birds-John-Byrne-Irish-Literature/dp/156478181X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books& ie=UTF8&qid=1294796314&sr=1-1

But if you were reading the book for the romance and not the political stuff, I think you would probably like it too.

Sure laugh

dead god (naturally it's evil)
and it is up the the two Skalan protagonists to stop them (along with help from a kickass red-headed guy). War breaks out, and in the latest three books it becomes a mix of political drama (the new queen dislikes them for a rather hilarious/incestful reason) and adventure, especially when it turns out that one of the protagonists is what you could call an extremely rare/precious blood mine. laugh

So much to say, and I tried to keep it rather vague! So yes, it has quite a deep story actually, hahaha

hopefully it's incest biggrin I love bro bro love. But other incest like dad son is not so nice.

Umm, I usually read more realistic book, Fantasy tends to make me delusional lol. I feel I get trapped in the fantasy world and it takes me a couple of days to get back to normal.

The only non-Japanese (outright) gay novel that I've read is "A Strong and Sudden Thaw", which was sort of fantasy/sf-ish.

Quick summary: in a world where a second Ice Age has begun, technology begins to falter and in the Appalachian Mountains people revert back to their strict bible roots. (Anti-gay laws, whippings, expulsion, etc) Enter a new young doctor, and the young local man who befriends him. Oh, and their are these dragons...

Good read.

A gay romance book I really enjoyed is "Bound By Nature" by Cooper Davis. Some lovely and sweet sex and a tragic but still romantic note. I read it because of this review: http://tayend.livejournal.com

Its not between the two main characters. Its between two of the side/major characters. Because of the circumstances it appears in only one book, but it'll probably appear again in one of the next ones.

Uhh... I know there are a few books about teenagers in modern times, but I think the only one I've actually read was "Boy Meets Boy" while I was in high school lol. It was a long time ago so I don't really remember much about it, but I thought it was pretty cute since it's rare to see a main character who is confidently sure of what he wants.

Quote
"There isn’t really a gay scene or a straight scene in our town. They got all mixed up a while back, which I think is for the best."
This is the story of Paul, a sophomore at a high school like no other: The cheerleaders ride Harleys, the homecoming queen used to be a guy named Daryl (she now prefers Infinite Darlene and is also the star quarterback), and the gay-straight alliance was formed to help the straight kids learn how to dance.

This is a happy-meaningful romantic comedy about finding love, losing love, and doing what it takes to get love back in a crazy-wonderful world. And, as he observes at the end of the story, "It's a wonderful world." Paul has both gay and straight friends, and they all hang out together at terrific bookstores and concerts, and advise one another on the sometimes troubled progress of their various romances. Paul is smitten with Noah, and they are beginning a serious relationship when Kyle, Paul’s ex, complicates things by deciding that all is forgiven. Joni is going out with Chuck, who dominates her, much to her friends' disapproval. Tony’s conservative parents refuse to acknowledge that he is gay, so the others must bone up on Bible verses all week so they can pretend Saturday night is a study group. And then there's Infinite Darlene, football quarterback and Homecoming Queen, who deserves a whole romance novel of her own. Life in their town is gloriously accepting of differences and only occasionally verges on magic realism, in this first novel in which same sex preference is not the problem.
