If you're the type of person who relies on mysterious-sounding locations of stars to determine your personality and outcome in life, get ready to be shocked.
The field of astrology, which is concerned with horoscopes and the like, felt a major disruption from astronomers, who are concerned with actual stars and planets. The astronomers from the Minnesota Planetarium Society found that because of the moon's gravitational pull on Earth, the alignment of the stars was pushed by about a month.

"When [astrologers] say that the sun is in Pisces, it's really not in Pisces," noted Parke Kunkle, a member of the group's board. Your astrological sign is determined by the position of the sun on the day you were born, so that means everything you thought you knew about your horoscope is wrong.
It turns out that astrology has had issues from its inception. (Aside from the fact that it tries to link personality traits with positions of the stars.) Ancient Babylonians had 13 constellations, but wanted only 12, so threw out Ophuchicus, the snake holder. Libra didn't even enter the picture until the era of Julius Caesar.

And here are the new dates:

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

Info on Ophiuchus:
Quote
The constellation Ophiuchus represents a man wrestling a serpent, dividing the snake's body in two parts. It is the only sign of the zodiac linked to real men, sharing traits with Imhotep, a 27th century BCE Egyptian doctor, and biblical Joseph.

Like Imhotep, Ophiuchus is considered a healer of men and a doctor of medicine or science. He seeks higher education and enlightenment. He is expected to achieve a high position in life.

Like Joseph, he is an interpreter of dreams and vivid premonitions. He is envied by his peers and favored by his father and authority figures.
The Asclepius and the Caduceus, the medical staff, are based on the constellation.

-------------------------------------

So now I may be an aries instead of taurus. And I fitted being a taurus so well, too. :/

I'm not mad, instead I'm kinda glad that Ophiuchus is getting some attention instead of being forgotten for the rest of time. I'm a bit upset about it being kept in the shadows in the first place though. That's just like how they added indigo to the rainbow just to make the number of colors 7 instead of 6. >(

Does anyone actually believe in that zodiac mumbo-jumbo? (not to be condescending)

It's not that I believe or disbelieve it, I'm just uninterested. I know there is a LOT more to the zodiac than just the day you were born; There's this whole mathematical deal going on. I just don't know nor care enough about it to form a definite opinion.

Well, there is a reason why astrologists have jobs...

As for this new constallation, it doesn't affect me at all seeing how I never really paid any attention to it unless I was asked. I kinda feel sorry for/laugh at all of those people who got tattoos of their old zodiac sign and are now flipping out because it changed. laugh

I've heard about this! My brother told me about it. He's the new one, the one that we both can't pronounce bigrazz
It took me 15 years to get used to being a freaking SCALE! I was a little fond of it in the end... I liked the thought of me being "balanced" (not that I really believe in zodiac stuff, lol). Guess I'm a virgo now. Which apparently suits me so much better.

Well, now instead of a Gemini, I'm a Taurus...

But I don't mind being a Taurus.

lolwut?
Not that I believe in that, but I'm already used to being an Aries and
to other people being what they are.
It's the only way I remember the time of their birthdays (I usually remember the day, and using their sign, I can check the month).
You can't take that away from me. o.O;

no
You're just hearing about the 13th sign? This is quite old news, but I heard about this like 7 years ago. I don't even follow horoscopes nor do I believe the Zodiac crap, but I'm an Aries and always will be and 99.9% of people agree. You really got to be obsessed with horoscopes to follow it to that degree. You'll never open the paper and see Ophiuchus in there, unless you read some monthly gypsy magazine. roll eyes

Actually, I read that there's is no previous record of the Sun passing thru Ophiuchus sign until 2009. The Zodiac Update is only for those born since 2009 and so on.

So, unless somebody here have 2 (maybe 3) years old, everything is the same...

^Yeah. It doesn't apply to anyone who was born before 2009.

And I don't really care even if I did change from a Pisces to an Aquarius. Not big on astrology...and I wouldn't really mind anyways.

^ no, I don't think that's true either.

I honestly think this whole deal is bullshit and misinformation spread by the general populace's stupidity and gullibility.

This isn't some new information. You see, it's because of the tropical zodiac – which is fixed to seasons, and which Western astrology adheres to – differs from the sidereal zodiac – which is fixed to constellations and is followed more in the East, and is the type of zodiac to which the Star Tribune article ultimately refers.

Zodiac sign =/= zodiac constellation.

So, you see, everything is still the same. : |
