i suddenly feel like bragging. how many 17 year olds know 5 languages? (yeah, im being nasty. im bored, and i feel like doing some evil. go satan, go!!)
my first best language is hebrew, and im pretty much better than anyone in that area. my second best language is english. not much to be ashamed about.
third best are russian and japanese, who share a spot. i can understand what i hear, i can read most (difficult kanji's aside) but i dont have much confidance in talking and writing, tho i can, if its simple.
fifth would be spanish, due to some dark time in my life i am now able to understand and read spanish.
also i have basic knowledge in arabic and french, but when i tried talking using them to a morrocan friend of mine he burst out loughing so it doesnt count.

That's impossible.. I think.. He may know the basic words, but he can't speak all those languages fluently..
Anyway, I know..
English Dutch German French Arabic
And know some basic words of Japanese..
P.S.: In Belgium schools it's mandatory to study English, Dutch and French.. And if you want, you can learn German and Spanish also..
Age at which the language is teached at Belgium schools..
Dutch since you're born, bcuz that's the main language.. French at age 10/11 English at age 13/14 German(optional) at age 15/16 Spanish (optional) at age 16/17
P.P.S: I'm 16..

and our theology instructor told us this missionary was apparently a genius

i think 27 languages are possible. since languages come in families, most words and basics are shared. for example- arabic and hebrew are sister languages. the basics are completely the same, and alot of the vocabulary is shared, like "arnab" in arabic (aka bunny) that is "arnav" in hebrew. the dots sistem, and more. in the same way spanish, french, italian, latin and more are also sisters. if u know one, you can understand the others, at least a little. japanese, chinese, korean - same goes for them.
this way, 27 is alot easier.

I know what you mean, Moritana.. and then you'll do get some basic words, but that's all..
For example Dutch and German do look alike, but they've got a completely different spelling and grammar..

For example Dutch and German do look alike, but they've got a completely different spelling and grammar.. thats when the hard part gets in. but if u dedicate your life for this stuff, 27 full languages are possible. i studied only english. the other four i just got cuz they are in my everyday life (i get a language better this way actually). if someone both studies and gets languages from a need, it can get to 27.
but im sure its hell for him mixig all that crap in his head....

Let's see...
Lithuanian, Russian, English, basic French (to be improved), some very basic spoken Japanese (maybe to be worked on some time in the future), just started learning Latin.
More languages coming up, I hope. Linguistics is my major, so that means German next year and Spanish the year after that. I think languages are fun. And useful.

Does Latin count.. With the languages..
Edit: Oh yeah, I also know some Greek(sp?).. Though it's Greek from ancient times,... but there's not that much difference between the current Greek..
And if Latin counts, I'll put that up too.. since I studied it for 3 years..
