I only know English and maybe a bit of French And Spanish. But I'm not confident in them

{I dunno if this was said 20 pages earlier....} Isn't it supposedly easier to learn languages when you're a child? If I ever have one I think i'd like to expose him to every language possible.

Eh? I was sure I've posted here already...

Anyways, I know Russian (first language), Hebrew (when in Israel...) and English (I came to like it when I was little, and it's useful).

I want to learn French now... Maybe Japanese in the future...
And some other ones, if I live till then. laugh

Spanish (first language), Portuguese (when in Brazil), French (third language), Catalan (when I'm in Spain), English ( fourth tongue), Italian (have been learning for two years now) German (learning at the moment), and well not sure if sign language counts.

English is my native, learned spanish both in early elementary school (just some vocab and phrases) and high school but went on to college to learn it fully. I am majoring in spanish, but I might change it to linguistics here pretty soon. I love langauges! I have studied (off and on) Japanese (took a couple college classes, caught on quite well), Russian, Farsi, Italian, Albanian and Indonesian. I hate french, just b/c of how it sounds but if I had to I could decipher reading it since I am already fluent in spanish and they are kind of similar.

Significantly easier, actually.

@n8starr - Hooray, a fellow degree student of Spanish. =)

^^ yeah I learned about this in a psychology class, children's brains are able to absorb information faster, and have what's called "fast mapping", where they hear a word just one time and can already use it and remember it. Over time this gradually decreases, which is why they say learning languages is much more difficult for an adult as they are already "set in their ways" pretty much

Fortunately, once the mapping is there, you retain it for most of your life, unless you really just don't use it. However, it becomes like riding a bicycle. Because the mapping is still there, it will be easier to pick it back up down the road.

That's why everyone should expose their child to multiple languages at a young age.

And little kids don't have as much info in their brains...
More storage place, and less distractions. laugh

Although you should never give up hope with that matter.
There are many people who learn new languages in more advanced periods of life.

Hmm, should one consider knowing a language if he can only speak it or should he/she know how to write and read it aswell?

I myself can read, write and speak English, French, Spanish and Arabic fluently..

I also can read romanian and speak it (even though my pronunciation is crap) but I cant write the language.

I plan on learning Japanese, Chinese and Russian in the next 3 years.

first, it should be my native language kadazan/dusun, (i guess i'm the only one here who speak that language) malay and then english. I actually love learning other languages. My interest with english language actually started when my dad brought me some bible story when i was little. *but, i still hv some problem with it until now
shy *
i only know some basic chinese & japanese. Chinese characters still hurts my eyes cuz i can't understand most of them and of course it hurts me much cuz i've been mistaken as a Chinese before.

and i regretted that my dad didn't teach me latin before, now when i ask him he just said he'd forgot mad
*why is this world hv too many languages roll eyes *

Meh, roughly 2. English and Greek.

I learnt german in school, but after my exam I miraculously forgot everything laugh

When I say roughly, I can have a conversation with someone in greek, but it's pretty basic as vocab has always been a weakness for me. I understand a lot of what's being said though.

I'm basicly one of those people that can't grasp learning new languages. I find it really tough.
