I'd avoid reading it for a while, then be tempted and continue reading after all. But the thing is, I wouldn't know if my favorite character would die, 'cause I avoid spoilers at all costs.

i usually never pick up a tragedy manga, as i never liked the story that almost exclusively revolves around a death, or other bad events.
that said, most of the manga that aren't lol shonen no one dies, my favorite characters end up dead anyway, because i like the side characters in most manga more than the main ones.
i just think GOD DAMNIT and continue on, a pit pissed, and usually stop reading for a bit, not because of the character, but because if i dont know a character dies, its a new manga, and i wait for there to be a lump sum i can read in one go.

The ones I can think of off the top of my head...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
I watched the anime version of Hitsuji no Uta and found out the hard way :( so I didn't pick up the manga for like 3 years.
I was on wikipedia looking at the Elfen Lied page when I stumbled upon ...'s death. Bleh. I was just planning on reading it too, so I didn't read it until like 2 years later (It was so sad).

I would feel sad but keep reading. The mangaka must have a reason for their death.

It depends on the manga.
But most of the time I don't know which character gonna die so I only stop reading after the death part.
When my favourite character die, I lose my mood and interest for the manga.
After L's (Death note) death, I stop reading the series and only come back for the ending (my curiosity ). I like the battle between L and Light Yagami, that's what keep me reading. I don't especially like either of them (L isn't really my favourite, same thing for Light Yagami) but I feel like they don't shine when they stand alone. With me, there are no replacement for L's role.
xxxHolic I still continue reading after Yuuko's death mostly because I always hope that she will come back

I generally don't read mangas marked as tragedy so that I avoid this scenario, but if there is a death, I tend to keep reading/watching. I was shocked when people started dying in Fushigi Yuugi, especially

Finnick died. I had grown to love his character, and he died in such a gruesome way. :(
I cried. That entire series was really a traumatic read. It was incredibly disturbing in a thought-provoking way.Post #450404

I'm glad to see that people would keep reading. Just because they died, doesn't mean a person should give up on the manga. If the death totally wrecked the plot and then it dragged on, I'd stop reading, but just because the plot got bad, not because of the death.

Well it all depends on how much i like the character but if its the case that i like the manga over the character i would stop reading it for a while then go back to it after word but so far been lucky that i havent run into one that has kill off a character i really liked

I would not mind so much in general but in some cases...
if
Rin would have died in that icecold water in Blade of the Immortal i would have stopped reading it
or Kirke/Cirke/shirche...witchgirl in Berserk ...same thing
and in some cases a characters death would make me pick it up again
how lucky we would be if Touma and Accelerator died in To Aru

Depends on the manner in which they were killed - that is to say, was it a well-written death or a really crappy one. If it's a good death, I continue reading as usual and if it's a bad death, I rant at the author but still continue reading. I always seem to fall for characters that end up dead (minor and unpopular characters - often villains - that get killed just to show how badass the heroes are) so if I stopped reading a manga whenever my favourite character died, I'd never get to finish any manga, haha.
Edit: Er, when I say I "rant at the author", I mean that I complain about the author or the story, not that I actually send them rude comments or anything. That's just all kinds of wrong.
