Which software would you recommend for playing music on Windows 7? Please mention your reasons too.

have you tried Windows media player? Why...? because it comes with windows and it has always worked for me, so I don't see any reason to have another or even change it. for videos then it will be a different story. For videos it has to be VLC media player. i find that there are no codecs to download.

Well, I personally would recommend winamp, but thats just me.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I listen to many FLAC files, and winamp is one of few that can handle it, and the custom themes is a nice bonus.

I've been using the Zune software for several years now and I still love it. The interface is nice and it's really well organized.

Here's a screenshot of UI:

It's like a better, nicer version of Windows Media Player.

I generally use VLC media player... there are very few file types it can't play. It also has almost every codec for video playing.

I wanted something more suited to playlists and background music playing than VLC or Windows Media Player.

Same here. wma may not have the best interface, but it's useful for playing music annd creating playlists.

I use iTunes (I'm on a mac, but I used to use it on my PC as well). I think it's perfect. Easy to create playlists and I have an iPod, so it's convenient for me to have all my music on there so I can sync with ease.
There is nothing wrong with Windows Media Player or VLC either, it's all the same. I can't see why you're complaining but whatever.

I'm not complaining, I'm okay with WMP and VLC. Just checking if someone might know about a better software. How's that wrong!

I'm using iTunes since Winamp broke one day and had to find some other music player and it really was a nice change.

(+): Playlists, Last Played Column
(-): Can't make a string of songs to be played next as with Winamp. You'll have to search for the song you want to listen to and play it and so on with the rest of them.

Anyway except that minus I don't have any complaints towards iTunes. For me it's the most convenient to use it. I share the pc with my brother and since we have different musical tastes and he uses Winamp we used to erase each other's library each time we wanted to listen to music. And it was pretty annoying to load 50 gb of music everyday.

Is there any way to make WMP more backgorund-compatible?

This, pretty much. Only major complaint is the inability to sort music by filename or file path so that different songs in the same folder can be grouped together. It can also be somewhat of a resource hog, especially on older computers.
