yeah well i finished watching the Black Lagoon anime the other day and watching that show made me want to read/watch more mafia(or yakuza)/pirate based stuff... so anyone know a good pirate or mafia based manga

You could check those:
Tokyo Crazy Paradise <-yakuza
One Piece <- pirates
Crying Freeman <-yakuza
Sanctuary <- yakuza
Watch out for the last two, they're labeled adult or mature.

It has plenty of serious moments (some that the mangaka kind of ruined) but compared to the other one in my post its a pretty laid back manga xD
Definately worth a read.
