I highly recommend going to one. It's loads of fun, you can meet cool new people, and there's a lot to do (and buy). This site may not have all of the cons going on, but you can find a good deal in whichever state you are in http://www.animecons.com/events/search.shtml
This one might help too http://www.geocities.com/jengacons/con_states.html

My cousin came over from Canada to go to a convention. I asked her if I couls go with her because I've never been (still haven't). She then told me it was yaoi convention and that I wasn't allowed.

I've been to Comic Con two years in a row and I went to Anime Expo 2007 (Hopefully I'll go to next year's too!)
Anime Expo takes place in Long Beach/Anaheim, CA (I think it switches between the two cities every year or something) and Comic Con (not just anime/manga, but comics in general) takes place in San Diego, CA, so I'm guessing that's a bit far for you ^_^;;
Recently I considered maybe checking out Fanime Con, but that takes place in San Jose, CA, so yeah...sorry I wasn't much help ^_^;;
How about this list of anime conventions via Wikipedia? It's complete with locations and other info
Oooh, I'm sure she's talking about Yaoi-Con
I'm soo jealous...one of my favorite mangaka, Takanaga Hinako, was there...
It's 18+

Where to start. There is just so much to do. Well there's the Cosplay (everywhere throughout the con) and the Cosplay Contest (posing on stage, performing skits in cosplay groups). A band (possibly multiple) coming from Japan to perform live. The Dealer's Room where you can purchase anime goodies galore. Artist Alley where up and coming artists sell their art (99% anime related). Art Auction where... art is auctioned. A Dance or Rave. Anime viewing rooms. Guests ranging from Japanese voice actors / series creators, to American voice actors / producers, to special anime-ish guests (Piano Squall). Panels and Workshops held by guests (how to cosplay, how to break into voice acting, anime discussion panels, etc.). Arcade / Console Gaming room. Gaming Tournaments. That's all I can think of right now. Of course this isn't a guarantee. It all depends on the con itself. Whether it is just starting and getting its foot in the metaphorical con door, or if it is well established and brings in thousands of attendees. Either way its always a good time.
Edit by mod: Do not double post!

Aww I wish I could go to Anime Expo. Hmm I've been to all 4 Oni-Cons, 2 A-Kons, and so far the only Atsui-Con. Thoroughly enjoyed them all, and cosplayed a little too.

Well you can cosplay and rave. What it is, though, is the con will get like a DJ and he will host the rave... playing techno and trance and whatnot. It's not only for cosplayers. Anyone can join in. Sometimes they'll pass around glowsticks for free too. The longest rave I've been to at a con was from midnight to 6 am.

That's the reason she didn;t let me go! And that's before she told me it was a yaoi-con. She was like "Uh....it's 18+ you can't go. It's a yaoi-con. I don't think you want to go."

No, but I need to hit Youmacon next year. I found out about it 2 years ago, but haven't had a chance to go.
Yaoi-con? Where? At some point I must go there too!
