Tokyopop is on my extreme hate list of manga publishers, so it's about time.

Same for me, i have been boycotting tokyopop due to them not completing rebirth. Not going to buy manga from a company that might stop publishing a 20+ volume series 3 books before completing it.

If they're closing why are they redoing their website though? I read an email about it recently... why are they always asking for interns?

Well Tokyopop will continue to exist, but not as a manga publisher. They're involved with multiple film projects, so I imagine they'll plaster their website with ads and promo crap from whenever they release.

Although I don't like Tokyopop much, it's a sad occasion when a company goes under since there are at least some people that buy their stuff. Best wishes to the employees that got laid off.

Anyone know what's going to happen to the series that they licensed?

Good for them (that they sucked so much they ran their own business into the ground), now if only someone else would pick up on the FMP novels again... none

It's about time. I just hope their few actually good series get picked up by someone else.
(It was the last straw for me when they dropping a series I was obsessed with right before the last volume, categorized a story about child abuse as "fantasy", and gave away huge spoilers on the back of their books.)

I don't care about the manga but their novels...what about them?

What about my Twelve Kingdoms novels?
I can't live without the rest of the books...
I love them so much that I own the japanese originals even though I can barely read them.

Oh and the FMP novel series also needs to be continued. I had given up on them ever releasing any more of them when suddenly they release book 4 and 5 in one go just 2 months ago.

They drop lots of projects and don't finish ones they started.

I get really annoyed when I see people that say 'good riddance' to things like this, especially when Tokyopop was really important to both the English manga industry and a lot of manga collectors.

But I won't get into that here. All I can say is: dammit. I had a ton of stuff I collected from them. Sure, Tokyopop's head honcho is a jackass, and sure, they're had some scandals over the years, but they released a ton of obscure stuff that wouldn't have been touched by a ten foot pole by any other company. I collected plenty of series from them and I still have quite a few new ones that will probably never be finished because of this closing. Sure, another company is probably going to pick up the more popular licenses, like Hetalia or Deadman Wonderland but what about stuff like Aria or Junjou Romantica? I mean, half of the licenses TP have will probably never see the light of day again.

So, yes, I am very saddenned and angered at this news. Tokyopop was a huge part of my manga collecting. The US manga market is going to have a huge hole in it once they leave.

Aria? You mean the series that they release a new volume of ... what, every few years? At least this frees up the license so that if there's a company that does seriously want to do it, they can - rather than let it float around in semi-limbo. Well, unless Tokyopop are just going to sit on the licenses they have just to troll, but let's hope they're not quite that terrible.
