Agreed with many others, I wasn't particularly fond of Tokyopop in terms of some of their business practices... I hated how they'd change the title of certain manga to something completely random and lame (
Ghost! becomes Eerie Queerie... I mean, seriously?!), I often found their translations annoying (I started out reading
Kimi wa Pet through scanlations and later picked up all the English volumes, but TP's translation was not nearly as funny) and they were loathe to include honorifics or decent translation notes, their licensing decisions often seemed reckless and many manga got lost in a flood of releases, and then later on they were just dropping titles all over the place and sometimes the printing and paper quality was really bad. I felt like they were trying too hard to make manga appeal to the mainstream by Westernizing titles and getting rid of references to Japanese culture that are really important, and that can really easily turn away "otakus", or people who are really into anime and manga, that made up their core market. Later on as I realised how Tokyopop compared to other publishers I became quite disillusioned and I hadn't bought any new manga from them for quite a long time.
It's sad to see them go but I'm glad it's Tokyopop going instead of Viz or someone else who I still buy from regularly. I reckon at least a few of TP's series which are popular and unfinished will be picked up by other publishers. I mean, they had a few titles which made it into the bestsellers, and I expect a wise publisher would look to rescuing those knowing there's already an established fanbase.
