In a way I'm sad, but in a way I'm not...
I used to be so in love with Tokyopop, but they've just been on the decline ever since Fruits Basket ended. They always dropped titles as quickly as they picked some more, most to be dropped.
when they canceled all their korean titles, I was so mad (Faeries' Landing, The Queen's knight!) so I can't say I feel sorry for them...
Oh well. They did have a special place in my heart when I was still in middle school...remembering logging onto the TP community website and making random polls everyday! smile

I'm surprised they stopped. I used to like the company's manga productions but now not so much. For me I usually buy manga in japanese since I don't favour liscensed manga volumes and the companies. laugh

meh. after GTO, was never a fan of their manga selection. would have been if not for the Initial D fiasco. translation wise, didn't care much for the lack of honorifics. it was the edits and attempts to sound "cool" and "gangsta" (in Initial D, anyway) that made me turn away. they dug their own grave for not listening to the fans.

this annual trend of big US Manga publishing companies getting shut down is somewhat disturbing, sad to say. feels like there's gonna be another blame game soon (they'd be half right, anyway), but hopefully, nothing bigger than last year.

I'm sad they're gone...but...they discontinued all the manga that I bought from them, so I'm not really surprised by it. no

Just gives me more motivation to work on learning Japanese, I guess.

I don't care about the company itself, but I just hope some of the series I read will be safe. Sgt Frog is on my collection list, and if I never get that, I really WILL just have to resort to reading scanlations. ): Same with Happy Cafe. Love the manga, want to buy it, but if it's just gone then again... scanlations = only way to go.

I'm sad that some of my collections won't be finished cry

I hope the titles they licensed and ditched will become available again (through scanlation or through other companies).

Well, there were already a bunch of series I liked that that started and then canceled. So it kind of feels like I'm used to this disappointment from them. I'm a little sad about Aria which was actually picked up by them after ADV only did the first three volumes. They started at 1 and only made it to 6... why bother redoing the first three >_< And Gakuen Alice had just gotten to where I hadn't bought the Japanese versions XP I'd been waiting so I could read it in English... I can read Japanese but series with sci-fi/fantasy/magic themes are difficult. And series without furigana are almost impossible. Anyways I think Gakuen Alice its pretty popular so I hope Viz picks it up.

Although I respect Tokyopop for starting the manga boom (especially when it comes to shoujo). Buying Ranma 1/2 from Viz was difficult for a junior high kid..... and it was like 1 volume a year....... But now, even at the same (or a little less) price, Viz does a better job. Print and paper quality, translation, title choice (Tokyopop makes some retarded translation choices sorry to say, ie. "Forbidden Dance"). Also, I trust Viz, and believe they are reliable. Tokyopop lost my trust a long time ago. And there website sucks.

So, I hope with the disappearance of Tokyopop Viz will make more money and release more quality series (hopefully even pick up some of the better Tokyopop ones?). In that way I am glad Tokyopop went under.

Personally I prefer paper to digital and hope Viz has continued and increased success.... and I really hope they pick up some titles please!!!

By the way, does anyone know, has Viz ever picked up titles? (I obviously know Tokyopop has).

I have something of a love/hate relationship with Tokyo Pop (hate their translations & crappy cover art but they publish English versions of series I love) but I still think it's a real shame they're going under. They publish a lot of great series and it sucks that it seems like they'll soon all be out of print (especially since I have at least two series of theirs that I'm collecting and am already having trouble finding the missing volumes for/are on-going). Knowing that there are scanlation groups out there who will finish the series is great, but not knowing whether you'll ever be able to own a physical copy in your own language kind sucks :/

Agreed with many others, I wasn't particularly fond of Tokyopop in terms of some of their business practices... I hated how they'd change the title of certain manga to something completely random and lame (Ghost! becomes Eerie Queerie... I mean, seriously?!), I often found their translations annoying (I started out reading Kimi wa Pet through scanlations and later picked up all the English volumes, but TP's translation was not nearly as funny) and they were loathe to include honorifics or decent translation notes, their licensing decisions often seemed reckless and many manga got lost in a flood of releases, and then later on they were just dropping titles all over the place and sometimes the printing and paper quality was really bad. I felt like they were trying too hard to make manga appeal to the mainstream by Westernizing titles and getting rid of references to Japanese culture that are really important, and that can really easily turn away "otakus", or people who are really into anime and manga, that made up their core market. Later on as I realised how Tokyopop compared to other publishers I became quite disillusioned and I hadn't bought any new manga from them for quite a long time.

It's sad to see them go but I'm glad it's Tokyopop going instead of Viz or someone else who I still buy from regularly. I reckon at least a few of TP's series which are popular and unfinished will be picked up by other publishers. I mean, they had a few titles which made it into the bestsellers, and I expect a wise publisher would look to rescuing those knowing there's already an established fanbase.

seems like the general consensus is that we seem to love viz more. we'll miss you tokyopop but in the end, it's kinda your own fault for losing all your readers because of little things like, oh, i don't know, dropping series repeatedly. bigrazz
well, i think viz and yen press will pick up a couple of titles each.

I picked up about 4 or 5 series from Tokyopop that are already completed, so I'm relieved to say that I'm not at all affected by their shutting down. I enjoyed their translations, but what annoyed me was the way they picked up a project and immediately dropped it 4 or 5 volumes later, which is why I've avoided buying anything from them in the last few years.

It is sad to see them go though sad

Ever since I heard they were having problems, I haven't been buying much from them. I was also mad because they dropped Rebirth with just a couple volumes to go. Unfortunately, because the original is in Korean I'm screwed. I can't seem to find scans of the last few volumes on line anywhere. The other Tokyo Pop series I really like are Demon Sacred, Pet Shop of Horrors, and Gengu no Seiza (which they seem to have dropped anyway). I started buying it after reading the 1st couple volumes on line. No more has been added to the scans on line. Fortunately that one is in Japanese, so I guess I'll still be able to read it. I guess this will affect Blu as well, since they are owned by Tokyo Pop. Unfortunately there is a couple Blu series I read too. For the most part I have been sticking to Viz Media series and Yen Press series lately.

Not a big fan of their translations. And because of their low levels of quality, they were unable to keep up with the smaller companies who managed to push out better products.

This time, quality over mass wins.
